Becoming a Deputy

Pay
Starting pay for those with no experience is at least $25.06/hr.  Starting pay for those hired with experience will be set based on experience.

Pay, Vacation, & Sick Leave for Experienced Candidates
A lateral transfer benefit is available for newly-hired deputies with at least three years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer within the 48 months prior to hire. The lateral transfer benefit affords a higher starting wage, up to 10-days of vacation and 40-hours of paid sick time, during the first year of employment.

Example of Duties

 

  1. Ensures the peace and safety of the public through enforcement of laws, ordinances, and departmental policies.
  2. Patrols roads and highways in Waukesha County.
  3. Attends court as a bailiff and preserves peace and order in courtrooms and responds to safety and security situations within County facilities as requested.
  4. Responds to and conducts initial felony, misdemeanor, accident, complaint, and ordinance investigations; issues citations, collects evidence, completes reports, and makes arrests where appropriate.
  5. Delivers and serves civil process papers and warrants on individuals, including transporting individuals to court or jail as directed by the warrant.
  6. Provides assistance during special events, including traffic direction, crowd control, and ensures public safety.
  7. Renders first aid when necessary.
  8. Transports persons in custody to and from institutions or court and takes appropriate security measures to ensure custody.
  9. Responds to emergency situations and assists in providing security, search and rescue operations, and makes appropriate notification to persons and agencies required to respond to given emergency situations.
  10. Uses appropriate levels of force to capture, control, and detain individuals.
  11. Maintains a variety of records and prepares clear and concise reports.
  12. Appears in court as a witness and testifies concerning law enforcement actions and investigations.
  13. Establishes and maintains effective public and working relationships.
  14. Represents the department and make presentations on law enforcement activities including crime prevention, safety, security, and department services to school and community groups.
  15. Performs other duties as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

  1. Considerable knowledge of modern law enforcement principles and practices.
  2. Considerable knowledge of Federal, State, and County laws and regulations.
  3. Considerable knowledge of courtroom policies, procedures; and processes.
  4. Considerable knowledge of statutory provisions relating to arrest, search and seizure; methods employed in the detection and apprehension of criminals and traffic offenders.
  5. Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.
  6. Working knowledge of the basic principles of first aid.
  7. Ability to learn and effectively apply principles, techniques, methods, and practices and to properly use law enforcement equipment.
  8. Ability to effectively communicate, understand, and follow written and oral instructions.
  9. Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to handle difficult and complex situations within established legal and procedural guidelines.
  10. Ability to learn and effectively apply emergency first aid practices and procedures.
  11. Ability to make sound decisions, use good judgment, and to be truthful at all times.
  12. Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and prepare clear and concise reports.
  13. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  14. Ability to use computer and electronic equipment for department paperwork, investigations, and reports.
  15. Ability to geographically coordinate a location and get to another location safely and in the most expeditious way possible.

Minimum Qualifications

An initial application screen is conducted by human resources. The minimum requirements are: 

  1. At least 18-years of age
  2. United States citizen
  3. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
  4. 60 semester credits of post high school education or an Associate's Degree from an accredited university, college, or technical school.  Note: Thirty (30) credits may be waived for individuals with training (e.g. military training) or experience that has been approved by the American Council on Education (ACE).  For information on how to request a waiver click here
  5. Ability to possess a firearm
  6. A Wisconsin driver's license or valid driver's license issued by another state
  7. No felony convictions

Supplemental Information

  • In general, the selection process includes an application review, written examination, employment interview, background investigation, physical ability testing, polygraph examination (potential topics may include drug use, illegal activities, thefts, job performance/employment, driving habits, life history, integrity, etc.), psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drug test.
  • Candidates best meeting the qualifications and requirements of a Deputy Sheriff position may be invited to take the entry level law enforcement written exam and/or to participate in other hiring activities.
  • Candidates with job related experience meeting the needs of the department, may, at the discretion of the department, bypass the written examination and advance to an interview. Experience is not based solely on years of experience but rather on the content and relevance of achievement and accomplishment in their law enforcement role.

Waukesha County's salary plans, group insurance programs, and other benefit policies comprise a package that is competitive and satisfies the needs of its employees.  This summary is intended to give only a brief overview of the employee benefit package; it should not be considered a complete or definitive source of information.  Final authority for determining benefits in specific cases is vested in detailed insurance policies, collective bargaining agreements, and County policies.

SALARY PLAN
The County has established a number of salary ranges having between one (1) and eleven (11) steps.  Employees normally begin at the first step in their salary range; but, depending on an individual's qualifications and other factors, employees may start at a higher step. 
After successful completion of the probationary period, you will receive an increase to the next step in your salary range.  Depending upon the department you are employed in and the number of steps in your salary range, you may receive increases at six (6) to twelve (12) months intervals based upon a merit evaluation by your supervisor.

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

HEALTH INSURANCE
As a regular employee of Waukesha County, you are eligible for coverage under the County's health insurance plan.

Employees and their dependents are eligible for coverage on the first of the month following sixty (60) days of employment.  Waukesha County will pay an amount equal to eighty-five percent (85%) of the cost of the health insurance plan.  The amount the County contributes toward your monthly premium is based on your participation in the Health Advancement Program's "3 Steps to Success."  For regular part-time employees, the County will pay an amount equal to fifty percent (50%) of the cost of the health insurance plan.

DENTAL INSURANCE
Regular employees of Waukesha County are eligible to participate in one of the County's group dental insurance plans.  You may choose either the traditional dental plan or the dental HMO.

Coverage begins on the first of the month following six (6) months of employment.  For regular full-time employees, the County will pay an amount equal to ninety percent (90%) of the cost of the least expensive single or family plan.  For regular part-time employees, the County will pay an amount equal to fifty percent (50%) of the cost of the least expensive single or family plan.

LIFE INSURANCE
After six (6) months of employment, employees are insured for an amount equal to their annual salary rounded to the next higher thousand dollars.  The County pays the full premium cost.  In addition, life insurance coverage provides for double indemnity in the case of accidental death and provides for benefits because of loss of limb or sight.

DEPENDENT LIFE INSURANCE
Employees with a spouse and/or dependent children may participate in this plan.  Coverage is effective after six (6) months of employment.  Dependent life insurance provides $10,000 coverage for the spouse and $5,000 coverage for each dependent child.  Employees pay the full cost of this plan.

Regular full-time employees receive eleven (11) holidays with pay during the year.

Some employees are required to work on holidays.  In these cases, extra compensation or an alternative day off may be authorized.

VACATION PLAN
The County's Vacation Plan is based on length of service and provides vacation benefits in accordance with the following schedule:

After 1 year 2 weeks
After 7 years 3 weeks
After 14 years 4 weeks
After 23 years 5 weeks

Vacation is earned each calendar year for use during the following calendar year.  The scheduling of vacation must be approved by your department head.

In order to be eligible for vacation benefits, employees must have completed six (6) months of service.

Regular part-time employees earn one-half (½) of vacation benefits.

WISCONSIN RETIREMENT SYSTEM
Employees are automatically enrolled in the Wisconsin Retirement System.  Employees are required to pay half of the contribution to the plan, with the County paying the remaining half.  The plan provides a variety of retirement annuity options.  The plan also provides for a separation benefit for individuals who leave employment prior to retirement.

SICK LEAVE PLAN
Employees earn sick leave for each month they have been employed at the rate of one (1) day per month for full-time employment and one-half (½) day per month for regular part-time employment.  Employees may accumulate up to one hundred twenty (120) days of sick leave.  Sick leave is not paid during the first six (6) months of employment.  However, at the completion of your first six (6) months of employment, you will receive pay for absences due to injury or illness up to a maximum of six (6) days.  Some employees are required to serve a twelve (12) month orientation period.  In those cases, employees are eligible for this benefit after six (6) months of employment.  The specific rules applying to the use of sick leave are available from you supervisor.

WORKERS COMPENSATION
If you should become ill because of your job or injured while performing work for Waukesha County, you are covered by the Worker's Compensation Act.

LONG TERM DISABILITY INCOME INSURANCE
Long Term Disability insurance will provide you with a monthly income if you should become disabled by sickness or injury and can no longer perform your job.  It provides protection against those disabilities that could last for years.

After completing the required waiting period, you will receive benefits as long as you remain "totally disabled," up to age 65.  You will receive a handbook upon employment with the County that will contain further details of this plan.

FUNERAL LEAVE
Employees are allowed paid leave to attend the funeral of a member of their immediate family.  Employees may use up to twenty-four (24) hours of leave with pay to attend the funeral of a member of the immediate family.

ORIENTATION PERIOD
Newly hired employees will begin their employment with the County in an orientation period during which time the employee will become familiar with the position, job duties, department procedures, and other relevant information to assist them in becoming a successful employee.  Orientation periods will normally be six (6) months.  However, departments will determine when the orientation period is concluded.

PAY PERIOD
The County's payroll period is two (2) weeks long beginning on a Saturday and ending on a Friday.  Payday for all County employees is every other Wednesday.

To allow sufficient time for preparation of payrolls and paychecks, your salary is delayed for twelve (12) calendar days following the period in which it is earned.
