Pay
Starting pay for those with no experience is at least $25.06/hr. Starting pay for those hired with experience will be set based on experience.
Pay, Vacation, & Sick Leave for Experienced Candidates
A lateral transfer benefit is available for newly-hired deputies with at least three years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer within the 48 months prior to hire. The lateral transfer benefit affords a higher starting wage, up to 10-days of vacation and 40-hours of paid sick time, during the first year of employment.

- Ensures the peace and safety of the public through enforcement of laws, ordinances, and departmental policies.
- Patrols roads and highways in Waukesha County.
- Attends court as a bailiff and preserves peace and order in courtrooms and responds to safety and security situations within County facilities as requested.
- Responds to and conducts initial felony, misdemeanor, accident, complaint, and ordinance investigations; issues citations, collects evidence, completes reports, and makes arrests where appropriate.
- Delivers and serves civil process papers and warrants on individuals, including transporting individuals to court or jail as directed by the warrant.
- Provides assistance during special events, including traffic direction, crowd control, and ensures public safety.
- Renders first aid when necessary.
- Transports persons in custody to and from institutions or court and takes appropriate security measures to ensure custody.
- Responds to emergency situations and assists in providing security, search and rescue operations, and makes appropriate notification to persons and agencies required to respond to given emergency situations.
- Uses appropriate levels of force to capture, control, and detain individuals.
- Maintains a variety of records and prepares clear and concise reports.
- Appears in court as a witness and testifies concerning law enforcement actions and investigations.
- Establishes and maintains effective public and working relationships.
- Represents the department and make presentations on law enforcement activities including crime prevention, safety, security, and department services to school and community groups.
- Performs other duties as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential Knowledge and Abilities- Considerable knowledge of modern law enforcement principles and practices.
- Considerable knowledge of Federal, State, and County laws and regulations.
- Considerable knowledge of courtroom policies, procedures; and processes.
- Considerable knowledge of statutory provisions relating to arrest, search and seizure; methods employed in the detection and apprehension of criminals and traffic offenders.
- Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.
- Working knowledge of the basic principles of first aid.
- Ability to learn and effectively apply principles, techniques, methods, and practices and to properly use law enforcement equipment.
- Ability to effectively communicate, understand, and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to handle difficult and complex situations within established legal and procedural guidelines.
- Ability to learn and effectively apply emergency first aid practices and procedures.
- Ability to make sound decisions, use good judgment, and to be truthful at all times.
- Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and prepare clear and concise reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to use computer and electronic equipment for department paperwork, investigations, and reports.
- Ability to geographically coordinate a location and get to another location safely and in the most expeditious way possible.
Minimum Qualifications
An initial application screen is conducted by human resources. The minimum requirements are:
- At least 18-years of age
- United States citizen
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
- 60 semester credits of post high school education or an Associate's Degree from an accredited university, college, or technical school. Note: Thirty (30) credits may be waived for individuals with training (e.g. military training) or experience that has been approved by the American Council on Education (ACE). - Ability to possess a firearm
- A Wisconsin driver's license or valid driver's license issued by another state
- No felony convictions
Supplemental Information
- In general, the selection process includes an application review, written examination, employment interview, background investigation, physical ability testing, polygraph examination (potential topics may include drug use, illegal activities, thefts, job performance/employment, driving habits, life history, integrity, etc.), psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drug test.
- Candidates best meeting the qualifications and requirements of a Deputy Sheriff position may be invited to take the entry level law enforcement written exam and/or to participate in other hiring activities.
- Candidates with job related experience meeting the needs of the department, may, at the discretion of the department, bypass the written examination and advance to an interview. Experience is not based solely on years of experience but rather on the content and relevance of achievement and accomplishment in their law enforcement role.
