Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to serve as a lead employee of the sanitation crew and to provide safe, and efficient operation of assigned heavy equipment used in the collection of solid waste.

FLSA status: Non-Exempt
 

Examples of Duties

  • Operates a mechanical, side loading packer truck, collecting solid waste on a designated route, including streets and alleys.
  • Operates rear loading packer truck, collecting uncontained refuse in a designated area.
  • Operates other assigned equipment as needed.
  • Detects, identifies, and reports improper equipment performance and makes necessary operational adjustments.
  • Leads and assists collection crews.
  • Cleans equipment after task completion.
  • Provides assistance to the supervisor in regards to heavy equipment operations.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED and one to three years of experience operating various light to heavy duty vehicles and equipment (prior supervisory/crew leader experience preferred); or
  • At least five years of experience operating various light to heavy duty vehicles and equipment (prior supervisory/crew leader experience preferred).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Good knowledge of:
  • State and local laws pertaining to the operation of equipment on highways.
  • Hazards and safety rules and precautions involved in the operation of sanitation vehicles and equipment.
  • Operations of heavy equipment used in solid waste collection.
  • The geographic layout of the City.
Skill in:
  • The safe operation of trucks and equipment assigned to the position.
  • Completing minor adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Managing one's own time and the time of others efficiently.
Ability to:
  • Perform strenuous work requiring good physical condition.
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Direct the work of assigned crew members.
  • Prepare simple records.
  • Communicate courteously with the public on sensitive sanitation matters.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and other employees.
  • Operate assigned navigation equipment and read and follow road maps.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Clean equipment using appropriate materials such as a high pressure hose when needed.

Special Requirements

Valid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and acceptable driving record.
