This is a professional, technical, analytical, and customer-oriented position within the User Services Team for the Infrastructure and Operations Division of the Finance Department. This position provides journey-level professional and technical support to IT clients within various areas of user services and support including; Office 365, mobile and desktop computing software and hardware, and all associated process and operations management systems.  Work involves delivering services that help optimize the use of information technology to the highest benefit of the County. The successful candidate will be an experienced, collaborative, skilled IT systems engineer with the ability to work on teams supporting a variety of business units, including County departments and outside vendors. This position must use independent judgement and initiative while working closely alongside other members of the IT Infrastructure and Operations User Services Team.

Position Summary

As an IT professional, the IT Systems Engineer 2 position is responsible for providing the following:
 

  • Operational support for Pierce County user services including end user software and hardware, on-premise and cloud based services, end user class operating systems, and all peripherals that support mission critical County business processes.
  • Assistance with the implementation and monitoring of new technology standards to assure County's technology needs are continually met.
  • Experience in a majority of the following technologies: Microsoft Windows OS environments, Internet browser technologies, hosted and cloud software services, Microsoft Active Directory environments, and IT security practices.
  • Methodical troubleshooting skills.
  • Coordinating, leading and contribution on IT projects.
  • Participation in projects to include the specification of requirements to implementation.
  • Methodical service management skills. (ITIL, COBIT)
  • Implementation and monitoring of IT processes and services.
  • Work with vendors, teammates and other internal teams for on-going business support.
  • Tier I/II technical support for software services, systems and platforms.
  • Extensively collaborate with team members to recommend new technical solutions and system processes.
  • Participate in; gathering system requirements, developing RFQs/RFPs, product evaluations, testing, recommending and implementing solutions.
  • Participate in cross-training and facilitate information sharing among team members.
  • Facilitate and perform information sharing with other cross functional IT teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, diplomacy, and positive attitude.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to make decisions independently.
  • Ability to work after hours and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work under stress and the pressure of deadlines.
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to constantly changing priorities.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in information technology, engineering, computer sciences, business, public administration or related field and four or more years of information technology experience required. Additional education or experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS:   A valid Washington State driver's license may be required when travel is required of the position. Ability to successfully complete a Pierce County background investigation.  Fingerprint and in-depth criminal history check (limited to the last 10 years) may be required.

Vacation (Annual Leave)
After approximately six months, employees receive six days of vacation leave. 
Since we value your experience, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Vacation accrues on a bi-weekly basis for full-time employees as follows:

During years 4-7, 16 Days
During years 8-13, 20 Days
During years 14-18, 23 Days
During years 19, 24 Days
During years 20, 25 Days
During years 21, 26 Days
During years 22, 27 Days
During years 23, 28 Days
During years 24, 29 Days
During years 25 & thereafter, 30 Days

A maximum of 45 days may be carried from one year into the next.
Pro-Rated for Part-Time based on % of 1.0 FTE.

Military Leave:
Pierce County has a proud history of supporting the armed forces and provides members of the armed forces with up to 21 days paid military leave per state fiscal year.

Holidays:
Some full-time employees are entitled to ten paid holidays as follows:

Personal Holidays:
Regular full-time and regular part-time employees also receive two additional paid personal holidays. Each paid personal holiday accrues on January 1 of each year and must be taken during the calendar year in which it was accrued.

Furlough:
Some Pierce County employees may be designated to receive 10 "furlough" days per year in lieu of holidays. Furlough days are available for use on January 1 and must be scheduled and taken within the calendar year. Employees who leave employment with Pierce County must reimburse the employer for used furlough days based upon the number of remaining holidays.

Sick Leave:
Sick leave accrues on a bi-weekly basis, at the rate of one day per month.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation:
Pierce County employees are members of the State of Washington's Department of Retirement System (DRS) and depending on the position or previous DRS enrollment will be able to enroll in one of many programs DRS offers.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Nationwide Deferred Compensation Plan.  This is a supplemental retirement savings program  that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

All Pierce County employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The county and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
