The Senior Network Engineer works with minimum supervision, typically regarding matters requiring greater technical expertise.  The position designs, installs, and supports enterprise technologies (security, routing, switching, wireless, VoIP) in a complex network environment.  The position acts as a mentor and shares knowledge with team members to help develop and improve knowledge, skills and performance.  The position serves as a primary resource for problem management and resolution. The Senior Network Engineer is required to provide excellent customer service, resolve problems in a timely manner, communicate effective, and be a positive contributor to the Denton County Technology Services Team.  The position acts as a backup to the Network Operations Manager. 
 

Examples of Duties

 
  • Installs, maintains, configures, troubleshoots, and upgrades network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls, VPN, wireless data and voice, uninterruptible power supplies supporting network infrastructure, monitoring software), telephone systems (telephones, voicemail, call center applications, servers), access control, surveillance cameras, cabling, and other infrastructure devices.
  • Provides advanced administration for network systems.
  • Handles service request escalations from entry and intermediate level positions.
  • Acts as a primary resource for problem management and resolution.
  • Responsible for following all county security and privacy policies and best practices to protect county information and assets.
  • Maintains network security through best practices.
  • Maintains network monitoring and management tools.
  • Researches, evaluates, tests and recommends new technologies.
  • Develops, maintains and communicates project plans and schedules.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory database of network assets.
  • Performs IP telephony configuration, installation, and repair.
  • Designs and manages construction of cabling infrastructure. Ensures cables are labeled according to department and industry standards.
  • Orders, maintains, and troubleshoots telecommunications circuits.
  • Mentors and trains team members to help develop and improve knowledge, skills and performance.
  • Assigns service requests and/or projects to team members as directed by the team manager.
  • Continually improve network processes stored in the internal knowledge base.
  • Supervises, directs, and leads the team in the absence of the team manager.
  • Reviews work product of entry and intermediate positions to ensure adherence to policies, department procedures, and best operational and security practices.
  • Recommends ways to improve customer service and efficiency.
  • Develops and implements strategies to lower network administration costs.
  • Provides budget estimates and recommendations to management.
  • Documents all work and maintains related files and records.
  • Creates specialized reports as needed. Provides weekly written report to management.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and minimum four years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
 
Bachelor's degree preferred.
 
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and ITIL Certification preferred.
 
Position may require various computer or technical related certifications.
 
Possession of a valid driver's license required. Must obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of employment.

Must not have any Class B misdemeanor or higher convictions or deferred adjudications.
