EXAMINATION PROCESS:
1. Training and Experience Evaluation - Pass/Fail 
Applications will be screened for best qualified applicants to compete in the competitive examination process.

2. Structured Oral Interview – Date TBD
The Structured Oral Interview will be before a panel and contain questions that assess technical knowledge, experience, and one's general fitness for successful performance in the position.

A total score will be computed using weighted scores on all testing components. Applicants must receive a passing score on the oral examination to be placed on the year-long eligibility list. The top 3 ranks (scores) on the eligibility list are eligible for the hiring interview for each vacancy in this classification within the life of the list.


BASIC POSITION FUNCTION
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, utilizing the Conejo Valley Neighborhood for Learning (NfL) philosophy and standards, assist in the classroom preparation and care of children from infants to 5 years old in a manner which promotes child's trust, security, linguistic, physical, social-emotional, and self expressive learning and development in a safe and well supervised manner.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS BETWEEN RELATED CLASSES

 


Positions in this class are established to assist employees in classes of Early Care Teacher, Early Care Assistant Teachers and other Early Care staff, in providing infant care services and classroom set-up preparation. Incumbents perform tasks within a limited number of standardized procedures. The class of Early Care Assistant Teacher assists in providing infant, toddler and/or preschool care services by performing work tasks with initiative and independent judgment within a limited scope of standardized procedures. In comparison, the class of Early Care Teacher functions with greater independence and performs duties that are of greater complexity, requiring significant breadth of knowledge in executing position functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the operation of an early care program including play, group activities and individual choice.
  • Assist in guiding children in the appropriate use of supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Help prepare and maintain classroom and materials.
  • Utilizing the Desired Results System, help the teacher and assistant teacher in collecting anecdotal observations, filing the anecdotal records in student portfolios and assisting in other basic record keeping activities.
  • Perform operational activities incidental to the operation of the program such as, preparation of snacks and clean up and general housekeeping activities; diapering and toileting as needed
  •  Attend staff meetings, parent meetings, and pre and in-services trainings
OTHER DUTIES:
Perform other job-related duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • High School diploma or an equivalent; and completion of six (6) postsecondary semester or equivalent quarter units in Child Development of Early Childhood Education highly desirable.
  • Some experience working with infants, toddlers, and/or preschool children.
*Alternate variations of education/experience may be considered by Personnel Commission staff as acceptable to qualify for participation int he examination process resulting in an eligibility list. When appropriate additional work experience beyond the minimum requirement may be supplemented for required minimum education requirements.

License / Certifications / Special Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age or above
  • Basic first aid including CPR certification shall be obtained for permanency in this classification (within 6 months of employment)

BENEFITS

MEDICAL/PRESCRIPTION INSURANCE: Employees working a daily 6 or more hour shift shall be eligible to participate in a variety of District plans. Employee contribution amount towards a premium varies based on medical plan. Family coverage is also available with an additional employee monthly paid premium. Employees working a daily 6 or more hour shift are eligible for Prescription Drug coverage.

Employees working a daily 4 hours or more to fewer than 6 hours per day shift, shall have the opportunity to buy in for medical and prescription benefits.
 
DENTAL INSURANCE: Employees working a daily 6 or more hour shift shall be eligible to participate in the District-paid coverage for family dental insurance.
 
VISION CARE INSURANCE: Employees working a daily 6 hour shift shall be eligible to participate in the District-paid coverage for family vision insurance.

HOLIDAYS: Up to fourteen paid holidays per year.

LIFE INSURANCE: Employees working a daily 6 hour shift shall be eligible to participate in the District-paid coverage for family life insurance.

VACATION: Employees with one to three years of service earn 12 vacation days per year (employees working less than 12 months shall earn vacation on a pro rata basis). The number of vacation days earned increases with longevity up to 20 days per year after 15 years of service.

SICK LEAVE: One day per month, cumulative from year to year (employees working less than 12 months shall earn sick leave on a pro rata basis).

RETIREMENT: Employees working a daily 4 hour or more shift are covered by Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security. Contributions are made by both the employee and employer. Click to visit Public Employees Retirement System(CalPERS) website. 

Employees working less than a daily 4 hour shift are enrolled in APPLE, an alternative to Social Security. Contributions are made by both the employee and employer. 

SALARY STEP MOVEMENT: First day of fiscal year (July 1st) for those employees in working status at least 75% of work year.

LONGEVITY COMPENSATION: Upon completion of 7, 10, 14, 20, 24, and 29 years of service from the hire date, employees receive an additional 2 1/2% salary increase.

REPRESENTATION: Classified staff are represented by Chapter 620, CSEA. A 1.5% service fee applies.
