**THIS POSTING IS FOR TWO VACANCIES**

Serves as a Safety Auditor for SCDPS State Transport Police New Entrant Unit.  Under general supervision, prepares for and conducts complete safety hazardous materials compliance safety audits and participates in group audits of carriers to assess compliance with applicable regulatory requirements including but not limited to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, Hazardous Material Regulations.  Prepares and submits comprehensive safety audit reports, which fully disclose the basis for all findings using laptop computer and specialized software applications.  Plans and conducts inspections of carriers' equipment, drivers' documentation, insurance and economic permitting to ascertain compliance with safety and permitting standards.  Conducts driver/vehicle inspections using North American Standard procedures for determining regulatory compliance and enforcement of the out of service criteria.  Maintains New Entrant and Inspection certifications.

Generates daily, weekly, monthly and special reports of activities.  Evaluates the effectiveness with data collected.  Attends various job training and in-service classes to improve regulatory and statutory law knowledge.  Conducts carrier in activations when required and ensures these are submitted to the Division according to instructions.
 
Performs education outreach to the general public and industry partners.  Performs other related duties as directed.
 

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma or a bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience.

Additional Requirements:
A high school diploma  and the applicant must take and successfully complete all North American Standard course procedures within 12 months of the hire date. The applicant must obtain new entrant and inspection certifications within 12 months of the hire date. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience. Must have a valid SC driver's license. 

This position requires extended periods of driving and sitting.  May be required to visit commercial motor carrier private facilities that may not be ADA compliant.  May be required to climb steep hills.  Kneeling and bending required.  Must be able to maneuver under, around and inside commercial motor vehicles.  May be exposed to various weather conditions.  Must be able to acquire and maintain federal New Entrant Inspection Certifications (must be able to successfully pass the inspection certification course).  State wide travel is required with occasional overnight travel.  This position requires lifting up to 75 lbs.

Additional Comments

Employee will be expected to exercise judgment and make decisions based upon department policy and procedures. Employee should be able to work under minimal supervisor, exhibiting a high degree of independence and discretion. Supervisor intervenes only when necessary.

Physical skills needed to perform the duties of this position include: clarity of speech, hearing, vision including extensive use of video display terminal, reaching and lifting.  Ability to tolerate indoor/outdoor duties, seasonal temperatures and background noises. Position requires statewide travel. Reporting location is in Richland County.
