General Statement of Duties

Provides a range of recreational opportunities for all ages in a fun, safe, and positive environment. Depending on position, may develop and implement programs, provide direct leadership, and be a positive role model. Should have knowledge of the 40 Developmental Assets and benefits of recreation to a community.

Hours: Varied; approximately 2-40 hours/week. Schedule may include weekends and evenings.

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following

We create opportunities that inspire lifelong passion to imagine, explore, learn, grow and contribute.
 
Promotes the benefits of Outdoor recreation.
 
Supervises participants in outdoor programs, helping to provide for a safe, positive and enjoyable experience.
 
Assists in planning, instructing in and leading possible "high risk" outdoor trips and activities which may include: bike and pedestrian safety, challenge course facilitation, environmental education, whitewater and flatwater kayaking, rafting, canoeing and paddleboarding, rock climbing, sailing, skateboarding, snowshoeing, cross country and telemark skiing, snowboarding, surfing, hiking and tree climbing.
 
Provides environmental education, cultural and natural history interpretation when appropriate.
 
Maintains records, trip reports and accident/incident reports.
 
Communicates effectively with public including providing accurate information related to the program and responding to patron and parent questions and concerns.
 
Provides logistical support and assists with purchasing materials and supplies as needed.
 
Sets up and breaks down equipment and supplies.
 
Assists with the general upkeep and care of equipment, vehicles and facilities used.
 
Drives City of Eugene vehicles with and without trailers, transporting participants and equipment to various sites.
 
Responds to accidents and incidents according to procedures.
 
Reports incidents of Child/Elder Abuse/Neglect observed by you or reported to you by a child/adult.
 
Provides leadership, role modeling and direction to outdoor instructor staff and/or volunteers, as directed by Outdoor Program staff.
 
Supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
 
Attends staff training and meetings as required.
 
Follows procedures and policies as set by the City and Recreation Division.
 
Completes other duties as directed by Outdoor Program staff.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
High risk outdoor activities and equipment for which you will be providing instruction, effective teaching techniques, age appropriate activities and safety guidelines related to outdoor activities.

The principles of group dynamics and group interaction.

The principles of experiential education.

Environmental ethics and human impact on earth's ecology.

Emergency procedures and accident site management.

Ability to:
Inspire people to connect with the outdoors.

Teach and lead groups of various ages and ability levels.

Communicate well both, orally and in writing.

Work in cooperation with staff and the public.

Effectively communicate with staff and public.

Lift and set up equipment and supplies.

Identify and prevent hazards, implement solutions, maintain safe environments.

Provide leadership from within team.

Work within the guidelines set by the City and the department.

Work with difficult youth and teenagers.

Demonstrate initiative and exercise some independent decision making.

Plan activities and tasks.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.

License or Certificate
Current first aid and CPR certificates or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder desired.

Valid Oregon driver's license, or ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).

Must pass criminal background check.

Selection Process

Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment. Applicants selected to continue in the process will be notified within two-three weeks after the posting deadline.
