Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Six months of experience or training in patient care.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Graduation from an accredited registered or practical nursing program will substitute for all of the required experience.
 
Possession of a valid Certified Nursing Assistant certificate will substitute for all of the required experience.
 
Completion of a medical assistant training program will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis.
 
Graduation from an accredited Emergency Medical Technician Program will substitute for all of the required experience.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Positions at facilities receiving certain Medicaid or Medicare funds require that applicants possess a valid Certified Nursing Assistant certificate as required by federal mandate implemented in 1987.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:
To perform routine sub professional nursing duties in the care and comfort of patients.

Level of Work:
Experienced.

Supervision Received:
General from a Registered Nurse, Practical Nurse--Licensed, Nursing Assistant 2, or other higher level personnel.

Supervision Exercised:
None.

Location of Work:
May be used by all state agencies.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from Nursing Assistant 2 by the absence of responsibility for more advanced duties and the absence of lead worker responsibilities.

Differs from Nursing Unit Aide by the presence of responsibility for performance of sub professional nursing duties.

Examples of Work

Measures temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height and weight; records in patients medical record.

May assist with documenting admission of new patients on medical record.

Provides care to patients such as ambulating, feeding, bathing, positioning and lifting.

May sterilize equipment and supplies.

Distributes clean linen, washes, dries, sorts, folds, and stores patients clothing.

Collects, labels and transports laboratory specimens as assigned.
Collects and files diagnostic test results.

Observes patients condition and reports any changes to charge nurse.

Transports patients to examinations, clinics, or recreational sites.

May be required to provide care to patients with infectious diseases.

Cleans rooms and changes bed linens.

Performs procedures such as enemas and skin care as directed by a professional nurse.

Performs all duties that may be performed by the unit aide.

Successfully completes training programs such as CPR, First Aid, infection control,  infectious disease, and/or programs that maintain hospital standards such as quality control, safety issues, and JCAHO requirements.

Maintains any necessary certifications.

Work may involve shift work.
