Description
- The City of Norfolk's Department of Recreation, Parks and Open Space, Bureau of Parks and Urban Forestry is seeking professionally skilled Tree Trimmers II to perform skilled arboriculture practices on street, park and facility trees utilizing a variety of specialized heavy, power equipment, climbing saddles, ropes, and hand tools.
RE-ADVERTISED Essential Functions
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Safely climbs, trims, prunes, removes and sprays trees as directed utilizing all personal protective gear.
- Cleans work area by raking, sweeping, and using a blower to remove all debris.
- Operates and maintains vehicles and equipment by checking fluid levels, tire pressure, fuses and light bulbs, cleaning, adjusting and sharpening chainsaws, changing blades, and greasing equipment.
- Leads crew members in the absence of a crew leader by completing work, and delegating work assignments to completion, completing and filing daily work reports, and making log book entries.
- Responds to emergencies by remaining on call after hours and during severe weather to remove trees and debris from raodways.
- Interprets safety regulations and exercises professional judgment.
- Ability to climb trees, work at considerable heights and in tight spaces, lift, straddle, bend and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity while using hand and power tools; ability to climb and operate multi-gear transmissions on a variety of vehicles.
- Requires ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time (8 hours per day), lift up to 75 lbs. on a regular basis, bend, stoop, push, pull and work in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, schedule and direct a crew in accomplishing tree trimming and grounds maintenance activities.
- Knowledge of pesticide mixing and applications; ability to read labels on chemicals and pesticides.
Education/Experience
- Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
Two years experience in professional tree care and one year experience in supervision or equivalent combination of education beyond high school and experience. Additional Information & Requirements
- Valid driver's license required.
- Valid Virginia Commercial Driver's license must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
- Commercial Pesticide Technician Certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
- CPR/First Aid Certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
- ISA Certified Tree Worker preferred.
**Applicants will be required to provide the interviewer with a copy of a current Department of Motor Vehicles Report no more than 30 days old.**
Work hours: 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. This is an Essential position; incumbent will be subject to 24 hour call during all emergencies or severe storms.
Work location: 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA; work performed at various sites throughout the City of Norfolk.

- Retirement If you are hired October 5, 2010 or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
