Career Description
Under general supervision, patrols areas of the City performing public safety and law enforcement duties, traffic enforcement, conducts preliminary investigations, and other law enforcement responsibilities as direct by competent authority.
Duties
- Patrol the City on assigned shifts in radio equipped vehicles. Responds to calls for service and is responsible for the protection of lives and property. Maintains high visibility and accessibility to the public. Investigates suspicious circumstances, disturbance, burglaries, thefts, traffic accidents and incidents in which a crime has been or may have been committed. Occasionally will book, perform custodial duties, and transport in custody prisoners. Interviews witnesses, complainants and victims. Interrogates, searches and if necessary makes arrests and administers Miranda admonishments. Process crime scenes, collect and preserve evidence, take photographs, and prepare appropriate reports. Keeps thorough records of patrol and other law enforcement activities. Enforces violations of the California Institutions Code, and all other State, Federal, and local laws and Ordinances. Conducts subpoena and warrant service, performs vehicular and pedestrian traffic control at the scene of emergencies or public functions. Administers first-aid and other medical assistance as needed. Makes periodic security checks of public and business dwellings, and private residences. When directed to do so, will make presentations to schools, churches, clubs and other organizations for good public relations. Testifies in court, provides care for juveniles and adults in custody, and
provides assistance to the Watch Commander in the absence of a higher ranking officer. Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience which is likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities of the position would be acceptable.
Level I, Level II, or Level III Certification for Reserve Police Officer is required.

- KNOWLEDGE OF: Laws of Arrest, Search and Seizure, Penal, Vehicle, Welfare and Institutions, Health and Safety, Fish and Game, Business, Professional and Alcoholic Beverage Control Codes. Self-Defense techniques Identification and investigation techniques. Evidence collection and aspects of forensic science.
ABILITY TO: Properly subdue and search suspects and prisoners. Analyze situations and respond quickly and calmly to emergencies, exercising good judgment. Make careful observations, remember and record important details such as color, time of day, mode of dress, and physical descriptions of individuals. Work cooperatively with the public, :fellow officers, and law enforcement personnel from other agencies. Speak and write effectively. Prepare clear and accurate reports. Properly use revolvers and shotguns, police communications equipment, radar and other department issued equipment. Work independently.
