Job Conditions: This position is located in the Kalaupapa Settlement in Kalawao County, on the Island of Molokai.
Kalaupapa is a small peninsula on the north shore of Molokai. It is a severely isolated community surrounded by the ocean on three sides and 2,000 foot cliffs on the fourth side. Access into the Settlement is by a small 5-8 passenger commuter airplane; or on foot or mule down a 26-switchback trail down the sea cliffs. Ocean access is limited to only a few months in the summer when the sea is calm enough to allow boats to dock.
Kalaupapa is a closed community. By law, only persons authorized by the State may enter the Settlement, and minors are not allowed. This means, no one can live in the Settlement unless they are employed by the Settlement, the State or Federal Government, or if they are an official volunteer in the Settlement.
The Settlement is a self-contained community which includes a care home, grocery store, gas station, airport, motor pool, carpenter shop, landfill, State library, U.S. Post Office and over 150 homes and buildings, many on the historic building registry.Duties Summary
Provide a variety of practical nursing care, and perform related technical work; may serve as "in charge" or team leader of assigned intermediate care patients in a ward or other patient care unit or a small facility on the evening or night shift; may supervise para-medical assistants and other unlicensed personnel; and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Specialized Experience: One year of progressively responsible work experience as a
A. licensed practical nurse,
B. licensed vocational nurse, or
C. registered nurse,
in performing a variety of personal care, nursing care and related technical work under the direction of a higher level licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or a licensed physician, and which required the knowledge of and ability to apply practical nursing principles and practices comparable in scope and difficulty to the I level in State service.
A Licensed Practical Nurse I in State service provides a variety of personal and practical nursing care, performs related technical work, and performs other related duties as assigned.
Substitution Allowed: Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements, will apply.

A. Applicants must possess a valid license to practice as a practical nurse in the State of Hawaii.
B. Applicants must possess current certifications for Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.
