JOB INFORMATION_San

Apprenticeship I - HVACR Technician positions perform skilled installation, maintenance, and repair work on heating, ventilating, air conditioning and, refrigeration systems, which include but are not limited to boilers, pneumatic controls systems, automatic, electrical, and digital control systems, including air conditioning systems up to 600 tons capacity; and perform other job duties as assigned.
 
      NOTES:

  • The City of San Diego Apprenticeship Training Program provides on?the?job training opportunities.
  • Apprentice I ? HVACR employees must attend job?related college classes approximately (at least) two evenings per week on their own time. The Apprenticeship Training Program is approximately four years.
  • Apprentice I - HVACR Technician employees may be required to work overtime, including nights, weekends, holidays and/or rotating shifts for which they may receive 5% additional pay.
  • Apprentice I - HVACR Technician employees may be required to work at heights over 100 feet, perform physical tasks including stooping, bending, squatting, reaching, twisting, and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 125 pounds.
  • Apprentice I - HVACR Technician employees are required to work both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions or a cramped workspace, and may be exposed to hazards of building maintenance (e.g., lead, asbestos).
  • Apprentice I - HVACR Technician employees may be required to be clean-shaven in order to meet respiratory fitness test utilizing a self-contained breathing apparatus.
     

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS_San

You must meet the following requirements by the last date to apply, unless otherwise indicated.
 
AGE:  You must be at least 18 years of age.
 
LICENSE:  A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
 
HIGHLY DESIRABLE

  • Familiar with basic hand tools and power tools.
  • Experience with computer software programs (e.g., Word, Outlook).

SCREENING PROCESS_San

The screening process will consist of the following components:
 
1. APPLICATION REVIEW:  Please ensure all information is complete and accurate as the responses you provide on the supplemental questions will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system.  If you are successful in this initial screening process, your application will be reviewed for applicable education, experience, and/or training to ensure all minimum requirements have been met. 
 
2. WRITTEN TEST:  If it is administratively necessary, based upon the number of applicants, all qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a written test, which may include, but is not limited to, the following factors:

  • Reading Comprehension:
  • Interpretation of Graphs, Charts, Diagrams, or Tables
  • Mathematical Computations
  • Forms Completion
  • Mechanical Reasoning
  • Spatial Reasoning
 
      NOTE:
  • Written test weight......100%
 
Test Date: Approved applicants will be notified regarding the specific date, time and location. You must have a Written Test Appointment Notice in order to be admitted to the test.
 
Candidates who pass the written test will be placed on a three-category eligible list which will be used to fill position vacancies during the next one year. For each vacancy, candidates certified to the hiring department from the list will be contacted for an interview. Category placement will be based on each candidate's final written test score as follows:
 
          CATEGORY 1: 90 and above.
          CATEGORY 2: 80 through 89.
          CATEGORY 3: 70 through 79.
