This class is distinguished from support positions by the variety of assignments and procedures designed to give the entry-level accountant/auditor practical experience in the operations of an established accounting system(s). The completion of nonprofessional accounting tasks, such as tracing and reconciling records of transactions and preparing detailed routine work papers and schedules, may be part of the training process and job functions for this class. Guidance and supervision is received from a professional supervisor.


Job Functions (Duties/Responsibilities):

  1. Assist county departments, government agencies, external auditors, or vendors with routine tasks.
  2. Participate in special projects and provide assistance to units, departments, etc. on basic audit or accounting related matters.
  3. Prepare, analyze, or reconcile routine financial statements and information according to standardized methods and procedures.
  4. Advise management in a limited role regarding modification and/or development of procedures.
  5. Perform routine work in verifying county/vendor compliance with requirements; verify the accuracy of accounting and other financial information using standard processes.
  6. Prepare routine journal entries, transactions and reconciliations.
  7. Provide basic work direction and training to employees engaged in paraprofessional or clerical accounting activities.
  8. Assist higher level auditors/accountants in the examination and analysis of routine accounting methods and procedures.
  9. Participate in the installation of new systems and procedures.
  10. Prepare basic analyses of various ledger accounts.
  11. Assist or conduct routine financial, technology or operational audits in accordance with established audit programs, including audit planning, fieldwork, and report writing. 
  12. Identify and document exceptions to routine audit tests, develop the findings, and work with auditee on expectations regarding corrective action plans.

Education and Experience:

One of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration with an emphasis in accounting or other specialty area related to the position.
  • Note: position-related professional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:


Knowledge of: computer capabilities and financial applications, including word, excel and accounting system/audit management software; generally accepted accounting principles, theories and procedures; auditing standards and procedures; risk assessment principles; federal /state compliance requirements impacting audit projects.


Ability to: prepare documents and written presentation of information; apply and adapt established accounting procedures to a variety of accounting transactions, problems and situations; maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees and the public; work and communicate in a way that is consistent with professional standards of conduct; maintain objectivity and integrity at all times; communicate orally and in writing; think critically; analyze and interpret accounting records.


Skill in: performing arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately;

using personal computer applications (including word, excel and accounting system/audit management software) for financial/mathematical calculations.
