Overview
Employment Status: Temporary, part time, "non-exempt" positions (with the possibility of the full-time positions converting to probationary)
Work Schedule: To be arranged. (Occasional Evenings, early mornings, and late clinic hours may be required). May work at San Bernardino Campus.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES:
Under the supervision of the Medical Chief of Staff, Director or designee performs a variety of skilled Licensed Vocation Nursing duties. Typical duties include but are not limited to:- Incumbent will interview, obtain pertinent patient symptoms and brief medical history
- Take temperature, pulse, blood pressure, height, weight and other vital signs and make appropriate entries on medical charts.
- Incumbent will prepare patient for examination by a clinician and assist in the examination when appropriate
- Incumbent will follow-up on treatments as requested and interpret or explain treatments to patient
- Incumbent will apply heat or cold modalities, instruct patient in use of physical therapy appliances (crutches, canes, etc.)
- Incumbent will perform vision and hearing screening tests
- Incumbent will perform electrocardiogram, ear irrigation and similar treatments
- Incumbent will assist in preparation of slides and cultures.
- Incumbent will prepare requisitions for laboratory and x-ray work as ordered by a physician.
- Incumbent will provide ongoing Health Education for patients.
- Incumbent will assist with Family Planning/Contraception.
- Incumbent will administer medications by mouth or hypodermic injection as ordered by clinician.
- Incumbent will assist in administration of all injections (MMR, Td, TB skin tests, etc.) on and off-site.
- Incumbent will set up treatment trays
- Incumbent will sterilize and maintain instrument trays and/or surgical equipment.
- Incumbent will conduct quality control procedures on certain equipment.
- Incumbent will clean and stock exam and treatment rooms with appropriate supplies
- Incumbent will notify nursing supervisor of stock depletion or expiration.
- Incumbent will assist in maintaining and filing medical records as necessary.
- Incumbent will intake new equipment and perform quality control check.
- Incumbent will train and provide in-service to nursing staff/providers on all new equipment.
- Incumbent will assist in appropriation and yearly planning for major medical equipment and supplies.
- Incumbent will assist in creating an inventory/ordering system for medical and office supplies; maintain inventory.
- Incumbent will assist in disaster preparation, monitor and maintain disaster supply inventory.
- Incumbent will maintain disaster supplies inventory.
- Incumbent will assist building marshal with Disaster preparedness to include training/in-service with quarterly fire drills.
- Incumbent will assist with communication of facility needs (i.e., work requests, etc.)
- Incumbent will maintain keys as indicated for locking cabinets/doors/drawers.
- Incumbent will cross train in front office responsibilities so incumbent can assist reception desk with patient intake and/or screens patient for appointment needs (phone or walk-ins)
- Incumbent will lead work of student assistants assigned to clinical area as directed.
- Incumbent will perform other related duties supporting the daily operation the SHC as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of nursing care principles and practices pertaining to the scope of practice; anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; basic medications and their effects, as well as potential complications; application and proper use of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing assigned nursing duties; and aseptic techniques and requirements. Working knowledge of California laws and regulations pertaining to LVNs and their scope of practice.
Abilities:
Ability to perform assigned nursing duties and demonstrate appropriate nursing practices; demonstrate proper techniques and skills, competency in performing assigned nursing duties and patient care activities described above; learn related clinic procedures and handle equipment required for patient care in a Student Health Center; understand basic medical terminology; make accurate observations and accurately document a patient's subjective complaint in medical records; exercise correct judgment within the areas of assigned responsibility; follow detailed oral and written instructions; use applicable health center automated systems as needed to perform duties; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required. In addition, successful completion of a state approved vocational nursing program in an accredited school of vocational nursing or equivalent training and experience as defined by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Possess and maintain a valid license as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California. Incumbents also may be required to possess and maintain valid CPR/AED certification and/or IV certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.Supplemental Information
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Documentation of Immunity to Hepatitis B and Varicella or immunization series; TB clearance; Tetanus/Diphtheria vaccine documented within 10 years is required.
