Job Description
Purpose of Position:
Why does the job exist?
The Curator of 19th and 20th Century American Southwest Collections, at the New Mexico History Museum plans, develops, researches documents and implements exhibitions and related public projects within the New Mexico History Museum and the Palace of the Governors, and serves as a resource for the historical review of exhibitions and program planned for the Historic Sites.The Curator works in close connection with Collections staff to ensure that the collections are acquired, preserved and accessible to the public.The Curator maintains accurate records, cataloging and care of collection in compliance with museum standards, develops and implements educational material used for training and outreach programs in conjunction with Education program staff at the New Mexico History Museum, and can serve as a resource for Monuments staff as well.
How does it get done?
- Plan, develop, and see through to completion new exhibitions, related publications and programs, and collections in area of specialization.
- Develop exhibition and related programming collaborations with cultural institutions regionally, nationally, and globally.
- Develop annual grant proposals for conservation, exhibitions, public and educational programs and related projects and provide assistance in fundraising efforts for museum projects.
- Coordinate with El Palacio, Museum or New Mexico Press, or other publishers for the timely production or exhibition and collection catalogs approved by the Director and Exhibition Team process or the NMHM.
- Coordinate with the conservation, graphic designers, photographers, preparators, collectors, authors, etc., within and outside the museum to promote the exhibit.
- Train museum guides and volunteers in conjunction with Education staff to lead public tours through exhibitions and collections to educate the public about the importance of museum holdings.

The customers are the general public, History Museum and Palace of the Governors visitors.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have the following:
- Master's or Ph.D in History, American Studies, or Museum Studies with emphasis on Southwest History;
- Exhibitions and publications in historical Southwestern themes;
- Direct experience in collaborating with arts and cultural organizations domestically and internationally;
- Direct experience in working with lenders, donors, and supporters in exhibition development.
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
This position is a Pay Band 70.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Museum Studies, Museology, Art, Art History, Art Administration, Anthropology, American Studies, Archaeology, Curatorial Studies, History, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Liberal Arts, Public History, or Paleontology and four (4) years experience in exhibit development, collections management, curation, creative writing, conducting research in specialty area of a museum, and working with historical concepts. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Office setting, exposure to visual/video display terminal (VDT) and extensive computer and telephone usage. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Occasional travel may be required.
