Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE
To perform semi-skilled, skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the City of Killeen.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Employee has no supervisory responsibilities.Essential Duties
Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
Operates a diagnostic instrument on diesel and gasoline engines for mechanical and operational problems.
Tests, services, and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment.
Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
Cuts and welds metal and performs body repair, touch up and related work.
Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and performs or schedules needed repairs.
Evaluates status of hydraulic equipment and performs needed repairs.
Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
Enters work order updates and progress in a computer-based maintenance program.
Maintains the security of issued city owned equipment. (e.g., tools, tool box, safety equipment)
Serves as a member of various employee committees.Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver's license, if required, and comply with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.
Performs other duties as assigned.Required Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent; and
- Two (2) years of related experience; or
- Two (2) years of specialized training in mechanics or maintenance management.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities;
- Skilled in the operation of listed tools and equipment;
- Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment and facilities maintenance.
- Ability to carry out assigned projects to completion;
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
- Ability to maintain working knowledge of gas and diesel engines and updates on service or operational technical bulletins.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city employees, supervisors, and vendors.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employee must have a valid Texas Driver's License by date of hire. Must obtain an air conditioning certification, a state vehicle inspectors' certification and a Texas State CDL Driver's License within six months of hire. Upon completion of the six month probationary period, employee will be required to be "on-call" for after-hours emergencies – approximately one week per quarter.Supplemental Information
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools, equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work, mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles such as electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment, computer analyzer, alignment machine, AC machine, tire balancer, brake lathe, telephone and safety equipment as required, personal computer, including fleet maintenance software.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
