Essential Functions

Abide by and enforces all compliance requirements and hospital policies and procedures, including those pertaining to confidentiality; uses appropriate communications skills with physicians, patients, family members, and hospital staff in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages; assists with orientation of new employees; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving equipment and/or supplies that are necessary to perform essential functions; reports broken or malfunctioning equipment to department head; requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care/essential functions; receives specimens into the laboratory using appropriate Laboratory Information System (LIS) functions, including: verifying patient name, medical record number, and FIN#, registering and/or ordering tests as necessary, printing specimen labels, accurately labeling specimen according to laboratory policy ensuring positive specimen identification at all times, and delivering specimen to appropriate laboratory sections; receives outpatients and processes orders using appropriate LIS functions, including: obtaining orders from outpatients, registering patients in LIS using appropriate client code, ordering tests as necessary and printing specimen labels, and delivering specimen labels to phlebotomist section for sample collection; disposition of the packing list, including: printing packing list using appropriate LIS function, packing samples, and sending to appropriate referral laboratory; prepares various reports throughout shift to verify collection status, duplicate orders, and fax status; takes action as necessary; reviews outpatient orders and uses LIS fax reports upon completion; reviews miscellaneous charges and posts to appropriate account; assists with new employee orientation and trains and oversees clerical activities in absence of supervisor; maintains miscellaneous charges with price, CPT codes, and test order numbers; writes up and sends miscellaneous charge sheets for billing; enters all industrial charges using a PC; reviews and maintain bills from outside laboratories; resolves billing problems; handles and looks up all laboratory outpatients registered inquiries from business office; monitors pneumatic tube system, including: responding to alarms and determining corrective action and printing statistics and recording PTS problems; monitors LIS operation terminals and notifies LIS manager of problems, including: monitoring LIS file rebuild downtime, monitoring LIS/HIS communication, responding to LIS terminal commands, loading and removing backup tapes as necessary during LIS OPS, and responding to all LIS errors/problems, initiating corrective action, and documenting appropriately; interacts with physician, patients, families, and healthcare team in person and via telephone; accurately reads laboratory test results over the telephone; answers telephone and directs calls; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.  Technical experience in a clinical laboratory is preferred.
