Overview
Employment Status: Full-time, regular "exempt" position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, occasional evening and weekend hours.

Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Director of Facilities Management, the Landscape and Fleet Manager provides leadership and oversight for all landscaping and vehicle maintenance at the California State University, San Bernardino campus and the Palm Desert satellite campus. Manages landscape maintenance, tree management, parking lot maintenance, athletic fields, the University's Conservation Garden, and the campus automotive fleet. This position supports a cooperative environment working with members of the campus community including Special Events and Guest Services, Facilities Planning Design and Construction, Water Resource Institute, Housing, Academic Deans, and Students to create outdoor space that can be utilized for research, instruction, and recreation.Typical Activities

List of Tasks for each Responsibility:
1. Leadership and Management:
Works to ensure that the Landscape and Fleet group is implementing best management practices on campus. Sets landscape maintenance expectations. Supports and moves new initiatives forward. Identifies current and future challenges and proposes solutions. Facilitates an environment that motivates, empowers, and inspires commitment from employees. Demonstrates commitment to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workforce. Works with a spirit of collaboration, inclusion, respect, and collegiality. Creates a team environment where employees are recognized individually and as a team for their accomplishments and success. Builds competence in others through effective coaching, performance management and mentoring. Provides outstanding customer service to campus partners. Understands the importance of the outdoor environment in student success.
2. Strategic Planning:
Recommends, creates, and implements long and short-term strategic and operational plans for Landscape and Fleet. Develops plans and programs to improve campus sustainability efforts through water conservation, sustainable landscape practices, and vehicle and equipment replacement programs. Ensures goals align with the overall mission of the University. Effectively communicates goals and objectives and trains employees on campus expectations. Managing the Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPM), Irrigation Maintenance, Computerized Irrigation Central Controllers (e.g. CalSense), and Irrigation Installations. Tree, plant selection, and installation. Managing equipment operations such as mowing, tractors, and small equipment, tree operations. Working with staff or contractors to design landscapes.
3. University and Community Partnerships:
As a member of the University community, ensures a community-focused approach to landscape management. Identifies and anticipates campus community needs. Builds effective relationships both internally and externally. Initiates and develops strong working relationships with the community. Specifically works to find opportunities to create "living labs" within the campus landscape. Supports the existing conservation garden and the Water Institute in their mission to educate the community. Works with outside groups to bring recognition to the campus for our efforts in grounds maintenance, tree care, and sustainability.
4. Functional Oversight and Operations:
Oversees the effective management and daily operations of assigned staff including lead grounds workers (4), grounds workers (10), equipment operators (2), irrigators (2), and Mechanics (2). Supervises, coordinates, assigns and directs grounds and automotive activities. Helps define priorities of work and communicates this information to all staff involved. Monitors work progress and completion utilizing a computerized maintenance management system. Manages landscape projects and new landscape installations. Reviews construction projects for compliance with campus standards and requirements. Assists in the formulation, development, interpretation, implementation, and development of policies, procedures, standards, and programs related to Automotive and Grounds Maintenance. Oversees and exercises control over University budgets pertaining to Automotive and Grounds. Manages landscape contracts and notifies the Union of contract work as appropriate. Serves as the on-campus arborist and Certified Pesticide Applicator. Performs 24/7 call-in duties.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
- Five years of progressively responsible automotive and grounds management, horticulture, or arboriculture experience, to include a minimum of three years leading or supervising the work of others, or an equivalent of education and experience.
- Experience managing grounds in a University environment is highly desirable.
- The incumbent must possess a thorough knowledge of the grounds and automotive trades, including but not limited to: landscape maintenance, tree management, parking lot maintenance, athletic fields, and maintenance of the campus automotive fleet.
- Knowledge of Integrated Management Plan (IPM), Irrigation Maintenance, Computerized Irrigation Central Controllers (e.g. CalSense), and Irrigation Installations.
- Knowledge of tree, plant selection, and installation.
- The incumbent must also possess strong interpersonal skills; the ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships and to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies within the university and with contractors and consultants.

Must be able to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 lbs.; must be able to carry loads ranging from 20-50 lbs. for distances up to 20 feet; must be capable of kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, twisting, stooping, and bending; depending upon the project, employee may spend 20-50% of day sitting, 20-50% of day standing, 20-50% of day walking.Supplemental Information
