Description
- The Nebraska Department of Labor is looking for a Safety Industrial Hygienist to plan and conduct inspections related to industrial hygiene and provide consultations to employers and others to recognize and control or eliminate occupational health hazards and diseases. The incumbent will be required to promote and conduct at a minimum 40 onsite initial health consultation visits annually and complete comprehensive technical written reports to the employer. Travel is required.
The position will be based out of Western Nebraska, with North Platte being the preferred location.
Salary range for this position is $22.434 - $32.491 per hour. Salary may be commensurate with applicant's education and experience, if approved.
Hours: 8-5, Monday - Friday. Examples of Work
- Conduct consultative field surveys for employers in the private or public sector where requested or required to inspect and evaluate the physical and atmospheric conditions at the place of employment. Analyze the findings and laboratory analysis reports of samples taken during the field surveys to identify hazardous working conditions and formulate conclusions about possible causes of and remedial actions for these hazards. Write technical reports to outline the findings of the field surveys, to cite specific hazardous working conditions and to recommend ways to control and eliminate these hazards. Confer with employers to interpret applicable occupational safety and health laws and regulations, to notify them of the scope of assistance available and of their obligations and to determine their attitude toward compliance with the laws and regulations. Advise departmental officials on the status of occupational safety and health as affected by the industrial hygiene conditions existing in the various places of employment throughout the State. Propose industrial hygiene procedures and practices to protect employees from work methods, processes, or hazards not previously covered by occupational safety and health laws. Cooperate with other governmental officials both inside and outside the department to ensure implementation of comprehensive measures for controlling or eliminating hazardous working conditions. Conduct industrial hygiene training, educational seminars, and promotional work for representatives from the private sector to provide information about and create active interest in the establishment and maintenance of proper safety and health conditions.
Qualifications / Requirements
- REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors degree in occupational health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, environmental science or related field and one year experience performing occupational/industrial safety investigations or analyzing occupational/industrial safety accidents or health problems. Relevant experience or coursework/training may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
PREFERRED: Bachelors degree or above in industrial hygiene or physical science plus 12 hours of chemistry including organic chemistry and 18 additional hours of related courses, combination of educational experiences of at least 12 semester hours of chemistry including organic chemistry and 18 hours related coursework. Experience investigating and analyzing industrial health issues, calibrating air contaminate equipment and noise monitoring equipment and experience recording raw data. Experience analyzing laboratory data, preparing comprehensive written reports to employers and conducting formal and informal training to employers and their employees.
OTHER: Valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of: federal OSHA standards and occupational health experience in principles and practices of health in workplaces; common industrial chemicals, chemical by-products and health hazards; principles of toxicology, bacteriology and physiology; organic and inorganic chemistry and the chemical composition, structure and properties of substances; principles of ergonomics; ventilation design; common industrial and occupational diseases, health hazards and toxic sources; principles and techniques of interviewing; basic office computer software programs. Skilled in: public speaking; business and technical writing. Ability to: perform formal/informal interviews with employers; listen to others to collect information; summarize information from multiple sources into a singular report; communicate effectively with others; maintain and service sampling equipment. Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Access, Word, Excel and Power Point).
