Description
- The City of Norfolk's Department of Public Works is currently seeking an experienced Mason within the Combined Operations division. The Mason will be responsible for performing maintenance and repairs to streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, ADA installation and utility cut restorations. Work involves finishing concrete, brick removal, replacement and related materials used in construction and repair of sidewalks, roadways, curbs, gutters, bridges and similar structures, including granite curbs.
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk's citizens, businesses and visitors, including the City's Street Network, Traffic Management System, Storm Water System, Waste Management and Recycling Systems.
Streets & Bridges is responsible for routine repair and emergency maintenance of approximately 2200 lane-miles of streets, 50 bridges and over 1,225 miles of curb line. We do this to ensure the health and safety for all residents and visitors.
Departmental Hiring Salary: $27,438 to $33,000 Essential Functions
- Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Spreads, levels, finishes, and shapes freshly poured concrete in the repair and construction of a wide variety of structures.
- Prepares sites for concrete work by breaking up damaged concrete, leveling or contouring the ground, building and setting forms, cutting and placing reinforcement materials, and similar activities.
- Uses hand tools and power equipment.
- Reads and interprets plans, blueprints, and state and federal specifications.
- Performs the necessary tasks according to required standards for dimensions and finish.
- Builds and/or repairs sidewalks, curbs, gutters, steps, ramps, drainage structures, support structures and related types of structures.
- Repairs brick by removing and replacing damaged brick, cobblestone and relaying masonry or cutting stone with masonry saw.
- Cleans work site areas and equipment.
- Stands, stoops, and bends in various work environments.
- Lifts, loads, and unloads equipment up to 75 pounds.
- Works long shifts in adverse weather conditions, night or day, including extreme heat or cold and under emergency conditions.
- Utilizes adequate hearing, peripheral and night vision, and depth perception to safely operate construction equipment in streets with high traffic volume.
Education/Experience
- Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
One years experience in masonry, asphalt or concrete. Additional Information & Requirements
- Valid Driver's License. (Please note: A current copy of your Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) driving record, obtained within last 30 days, is required at the time of interview.)
- Must obtain CDL within six months of appointment.
- Work Hours: Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
This position is classified as Essential and will be required to work 24-hour shifts during periods of inclement weather or other emergencies.

- Retirement If you are hired October 5, 2010 or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
