Duties Summary
Plays a musical instrument and/or its related double in the Hawai`i County or West Hawai`i Band at public performances; and performs other related duties as assigned.
This is an advanced level in the Musician series and plays at the level six (6) proficiency. This level is distinguished by the additional performance of special assignments in at least one (1) of the following capacities: first chair, soloist, assistant librarian. Applicants will be required to audition before the Band Director.
Immediate vacancy is with the Hawai`i County Band in Hilo for clarinet, trombone or trumpet.
Must be proficient in clarinet, trombone or trumpet and be able to perform on multiple parts within the section including solo parts.
Expertise in any of the following for future vacancies:
Percussion: drums, xylophone, timpani, keyboard, auxiliary percussion, etc.
Woodwind: alto saxophone, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, flute, etc.
Brass: trombone, french horn, trumpet, tuba, etc.
Special Working Conditions:- Must be available to work Tuesday and Thursday evenings, weekends and holidays; average of 18 hours per month.
- Must be physically able to march in parades including during inclement weather.
Examples of Duties
- Plays all musical parts, including occasional solo passages, for the percussion in band performances and in accompaniment to featured singing, dancing, or instrumental solos.
- Participates in concerts, parades, and other regular and special engagements of the band.
- Participates in full band rehearsals, sectionals, or small group rehearsals, including marching practice.
- Warms up, warms down, tunes up, sets up, and breaks down all equipment.
- Studies musical scores and memorizes parts.
- Transports personal instrument(s) and equipment to and from rehearsals; cares for and maintains instrument(s) and equipment.
- Participates in Band Advisory Committee to review and resolve section concerns including the assignment of parts and performance techniques.
- May conduct entire band in the absence of Director and/or Assistant Director.
- May participate in the auditioning committee.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Additional special assignments within the band:First Chair:
- Supervises the positions and activities of a section; conducts section rehearsals as required.
- Identifies musical problems and works with other band members to resolve them.
- Plays all musical parts, including regularly playing solo passages, for percussion.
- Regularly and frequently plays percussion as a featured soloist.
- Assists in the maintenance of the band's music library and property control system; participates in indexing, cataloging, and filing band music and other matters.
- Replaces and mends torn and worn music sheets.
- Assists in maintaining and safeguarding all band instruments and equipment.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:- graduation from high school, and
- applicants shall have experience playing in a concert band or orchestra or in a musical group over a seven year period.
Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points.
Knowledge of: percussion, including literature, history, and performance techniques; the fundaments of music and playing in a concert band/orchestra; musical compositions for percussion; the fundamentals and practices pertinent to specialty(ies).Ability to: play percussion in the band at the level six proficiency with the expected degree of skill, technique, and interpretation, and the appropriate tone, rhythm, and intonation; read music proficiently and memorize parts; understand oral and written instructions; adapt and adjust individual performance to suit the needs of the group; carry instrument and march in parades; establish effective working relationships with co-workers.
