Position Summary

NATURE OF WORK

This particular position will examine building plans electronically for the Building and Code Enforcement Division of Planning and Public Works Department.  Both classifications involve considerable public contact and the employee must have the ability to understand and communicate non-structural design requirements in a clear, concise manner to our customers. Duties may also include performing on-site inspections and answering questions from applicants and designers regarding code compliance. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed periodically for technical adequacy and conformance to code, ordinance, and internal procedures.

Plans Examiner 1 – Under direct supervision, an employee in this classification will review residential, and possibly light commercial, building construction plans for completeness, accuracy and compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical and other codes. 
  • Electronically reviewing residential blueprints and construction plans for conformance with building and construction codes.
  • Assisting in identifying plan discrepancies with established codes or regulations and advising customers of corrective action needed.
  • Responding to phone calls and emails and providing information to architects, engineers, and the public regarding County codes, compliance, plan corrections and legal specifications or requirements.
  • Assisting in drafting reports, drawings, and code revisions in an electronic format and environment.
  • Participating in customer information meetings, as required. 
Plans Examiner 2 – Under general direction, an employee in this classification is responsible for reviewing commercial and residential building construction plans for completeness, accuracy and compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical and other codes. 
  • Electronically reviewing residential and commercial blueprints and construction plans for conformance with building and construction codes.
  • Identifying plan discrepancies with established codes or regulations and advising customers of corrective action needed.
  • Establishing criteria for correcting non-compliance of codes before building permits are issued.
  • Serving as a liaison with other departments and divisions as necessary, regarding code compliance.
  • Responding to phone calls and emails and providing information to architects, engineers, and the public regarding County codes, compliance, plan corrections and legal specifications or requirements.
  • Participating in pre-filing and customer information meetings.
  • Drafting reports, drawings, and code revisions in an electronic format and environment.
  • Reviewing records, preparing correspondence, and assisting office staff, as necessary.

Qualifications

RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS

Plans Examiner 1: 
  • Two or more years of plans examining, building inspection or other work related to the position.
  • ICC Certification or equivalent is desired.
Plans Examiner 2: 
  • An Associate of Arts degree in Building Technology, Engineering, Architecture, or related field; and
  • Three or more years' experience in building/fire inspection, plans examining; and
  • A current ICC Plans Examiner certification is required.
Plans Examiner 1 and 2:
  • Additional experience or education may substitute equally for the general recruiting requirements.
  • Union membership is required within 30 days of employment.
