Fleet Technician I: $15.905 - $19.417 hourly
Fleet Technician II: $19.417 - $23.704 hourly
Fleet Technician III: $23.704 - $28.928 hourly

Fleet Technician I
Under general supervision, services, inspects, and performs semi-skilled repairs to a variety of light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment; assists journey-level technicians; and performs related duties as assigned.
 
Under immediate supervision, diagnoses, maintains, repairs and overhauls a wide variety of diesel, gasoline and natural gas-powered heavy, medium and light duty vehicles including but not limited to: trucks, cars, fire apparatus, and various forms of construction equipment; maintains, services and repairs engines on small equipment; operates a variety of hand, power and shop tools; and performs related duties as assigned.
 
Fleet Technician II
Under close supervision, diagnoses, maintains, repairs and overhauls a wide variety of diesel, gasoline and natural gas-powered heavy, medium and light duty vehicles including but not limited to: trucks, cars, fire apparatus, and various forms of construction equipment; maintains, services and repairs engines on small equipment; operates a variety of hand, power and shop tools; and performs related duties as assigned.
 
Fleet Technician III
Under general supervision, diagnoses, maintains, repairs and overhauls a wide variety of diesel, gasoline and natural gas-powered heavy, medium and light duty vehicles including but not limited to: trucks, cars, fire apparatus, and various forms of construction equipment; maintains, services and repairs engines on small equipment; operates a variety of hand, power and shop tools; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
 
The Fleet Technician I, II, III reports to the Fleet Services Supervisor and represents the skill levels from basic to journey-level class in this series.
 
Fleet Technician I 
The incumbents perform a range of minor service functions involving mechanical and basic electrical components. This class is the entry level class in the position and provides an opportunity to gain knowledge in the higher skills required in the level II and III positions. Incumbents will learn to use more specialized diagnostic equipment and gain greater independence of action on work assignments.
 
Fleet Technician II 
The incumbents perform a higher range of maintenance functions involving additional mechanical, electrical, electronic and hydraulic components. This positon also uses more specialized equipment for repair and diagnostics. This class differs from the Fleet Technician I position, given the higher skills required to use more specialized diagnostic equipment, greater independence of action needed to diagnose a range of mechanical and repair needs, and the higher complexity level of the work assignments performed.
 
Fleet Technician III 
The incumbents perform a full range of maintenance functions involving mechanical, electrical, electronic and hydraulic components. This class differs from the Fleet Technician II position, given the higher skill level, and greater independence. This position represents the Journeyman level class in this series and should be able to address any shop repairs to all equipment as needed.

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed with the proper certification and experience. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the class.

1. Diagnoses and performs major repairs and overhauls to engines, involving inspection and replace­ment of broken or worn parts such as pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings, fittings, wrist pins, and gaskets; inspects, troubleshoots, diagnoses, repairs, cleans, adjusts and installs fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems involving repair and replacement of such parts as fuel injection components, carburetors, fuel pumps, spark plugs, starter motors, distributors, generators, voltage regulators, wiring switches, batteries, radiators, thermostats, and water pumps.
2. Diagnoses, repairs and adjusts steering mechanisms and other controls, checking and aligning wheels.
3. Inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots and repairs high pressure water pumps, valves and auxiliary mechanical systems on fire vehicles, such as pumpers, ladder trucks, water tenders.
4. Diagnosis, inspects, services and repairs vehicle braking systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, fire pump systems and associated power take-off equipment; installs and repairs power take-off equipment such as electric cranes, hoists and hydraulic lift equipment.
5. Road tests vehicles; drives truck or equipment as required; inspects vehicles in the shop and field.
6. Services and repairs vehicle air conditioning systems.
7. Diagnoses engine electronic computer using diagnostic scope.
8. Diagnoses and performs electrical, hydraulic and other repairs in the field.
9. Reads and interprets manuals, drawings, specifications, blueprints, and sketches.
10. Estimates labor, material and equipment required to complete assignments; completes and updates service records; senior staff may provide technical guidance to other technicians as needed.
11. Installs and repairs power take-off equipment such as electric cranes, hoists and hydraulic lift equipment.
12. Performs welding work on vehicles, equipment and tools; fabricates metal parts for vehicles, equipment, tools, tanks, plates, and grates; straightens and repairs bent vehicles, equipment and tools; fabricates and installs bumpers, tow bars, ladder racks, tool boxes, and pipe railings; installs light racks, decals and other equipment on City vehicles, including emergency vehicles.
13. Ensures proper safety precautions are observed.
14. Performs preventive maintenance and service work on construction equipment, heavy trucks, back-hoes, automobiles, light trucks,  pumpers, ladder trucks, water tenders, and other equipment, including tune-ups, checking and replenishing fluid levels, replacing hoses, belts, batteries, wiper blades, bulbs, lamps; cleaning of vehicles.
15. Maintains, services and repairs small gasoline engines on a wide variety of maintenance and construction equipment, such as mowers, generators, stump grinders, wood chippers, chain saws, cement saws, compressors, and jackhammers light towers.
16. Alternative fuel vehicle maintenance.

Knowledge of:

Fleet Technician I 
Basic operations and maintenance of vehicle systems and components; use and maintenance of basic shop, hand and power tools, such as sockets, wrenches, torque wrenches, pneumatic wrenches, greasing tools and other related tools; types and grades of lubricants, coolants, brake, steering and other fluids used in automotive and equipment servicing; use and maintenance of tire changing and balancing equipment; safe working practices and safety equipment related to the work; federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the handling and disposal of hazardous waste and clean air requirements.
 
Fleet Technician II 
Methods, techniques, parts, tools and materials used in the overhaul, maintenance and repair of diesel, gasoline and natural gas powered vehicles; operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment common to the field; safe work methods and safety regulations; use and operation of oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment and materials; shop mathematics; practices and procedures of shop and field welding; welding properties of various metals and alloys; lubrication systems, including oils and greases used in servicing and maintaining vehicles and equipment; federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the handling and disposal of hazardous waste and clean air requirements.
 
Fleet Technician III 
Advanced methods, techniques, parts, tools and materials used in the overhaul, maintenance and repair of diesel, gasoline and natural gas powered vehicles; operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment common to the field; safe work methods and safety regulations; use and operation of oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment and materials; shop mathematics; practices and procedures of shop and field welding; welding properties of various metals and alloys; lubrication systems, including oils and greases used in servicing and maintaining vehicles and equipment; federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the handling and disposal of hazardous waste and clean air requirements.

Ability to:
 
Fleet Technician I
Operate basic shop, hand and power tools, vehicle hoists and jacks; operate tire changing and balancing equipment; understand and follow oral and written instructions; keep basic logs and records.
 
Fleet Technician II and III
Diagnose and repair a wide variety of diesel, gasoline, and natural gas powered vehicles and related equipment; operate and maintain a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools, and equipment used in the work; understand and follow oral and written instructions; estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments; exercise independent judgment in accordance with general guidelines; prepare basic records and reports; read and interpret manuals, specifications, and drawings; use shop mathematics to make calculations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work; fabricate and repair a wide variety of metal parts, equipment, and tools; safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
 
Education/Training/Experience:
 
Fleet Technician I 
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent and three years of entry-level experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy medium and light duty vehicles, fire apparatus equipment or construction equipment, including specialized vocational training in automotive repair and diagnostic practices; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Fleet Technician II and III
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent and three years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy medium and light duty vehicles, fire apparatus equipment or construction equipment, including specialized vocational training in automotive repair and diagnostic practices; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements:
 
Fleet Technician I 
A valid Class C California driver's license (Class A driver's license is preferred) and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's Vehicle Insurance Policy.
 
Possession of, or ability to obtain, five (5) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Technician Certifications within 18 months of hire date. Certification course work to be determined by Fleet Services Supervisor.
 
Fleet Technician II and III 
A valid Class C California driver's license, either a Class A or Class B driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of date of hire, and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy. A Class M1 driver's license is highly desirable.
 
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, an ASE Master Automobile Technician Certification or ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician Certification within 18 months of date of hire.  Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a Fire Mechanic Certification within 18 months of date of hire.
