Job Description

COMING SOON.  The City of Lodi Fire Department will be opening a recruitment for entry-level Fire Fighter in the near future (June 25 - 29, 2018).  The City will be using the  Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) and all applicants must be on the FCTC's list and meet the minimum qualifications for Fire Fighter and possess the required certifications (EMT and valid CPAT card issued between June 30, 2017 and June 29, 2018).  Applicants who are not on the FCTC list will not move forward in the interview/selection process.  Additional information on the FCTC SEL, testing dates, and testing locations can be located on the FCTC website:   http://www.fctconline.org/find-a-job/fctc-statewide-list/

Under supervision, participates in firefighting, emergency medical services, fire prevention activities, fire investigations, hazardous materials, rescues, confined space and homeland security incidents; operates and maintains fire apparatus; performs various fire support assignments; performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Firefighter I is the entry level of the Firefighter class series. Under close supervision, learns and performs a variety of firefighting assignments. With training and experience, the work becomes more diversified and difficult. Incumbents are expected to successfully complete the fire academy and progress to the higher level of Firefighter II classification after completion of a one year probationary period.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Responds to a wide range of fire, rescue and hazardous material alarms and operates fire equipment and apparatus; connects and lays fire hose lines connecting to hydrants and between engines; controls and extinguishes fires; raises and lowers ladders during firefighting operations; uses various hand and power tools to obtain entry to buildings, assists trapped victims, and provides ventilation.

Responds as an Emergency Medical Technician at the basic life support level, including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, illness and trauma emergency medical care.

Assists in clean-up, salvage and overhaul operations. Supports fire investigation activities. Uses firefighting and chemical safety apparel and equipment, including turnout gear, helmets, hoods, and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Performs regularly scheduled maintenance on apparatus, hoses and equipment to ensure readiness; cleans fire station & equipment.

Participate in public relations and public education programs.

Participate in staff support assignments which may include fire prevention, inspection, maintenance of inventory records, inspection of departmental equipment, and investigations.

Performs other duties related to the operation of the department and the City including additional duties that enable the department and City to meet the diverse needs of its community

Effectively communicate with people under trying circumstances. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work.

Willingness to participate in the Lodi Fire Department fitness program.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of: Rules, policies and procedures governing the Lodi Fire Department; firefighting methods, techniques and equipment; operation and maintenance practices and methods for a variety of fire apparatus and equipment. Safety practices and precautions pertaining to work. Geographical layout of the City and location of various fire suppression utilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical combination is:

Education: High school graduate or equivalent. College level Fire Science coursework is desirable. Age: Must be 18 years of age at time of application.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Completion of coursework required for Firefighter I certification issued by the California State Fire Marshal by end of probationary period.

Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card (June 30, 2017 - June 29, 2018)

Current and valid California Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Class C license with the ability to obtain the appropriate Driver's License with endorsements as mandated by the City of Lodi issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles to enable them to drive required Fire Department vehicles within 18 months.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
May be asked to work scheduled and emergency overtime.

Mobility: frequent performance of heavy manual labor; frequent crawl, bend, stoop, reach, and climb for long period of time.

Lifting: frequent lifting and maneuvering various tools, equipment and apparatus weighing up to 75 pounds.

Vision: essential duties require the mental and/or physical ability to read fine print on labels, manuals, maps, and diagrams.

Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching.

Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. May be required to wear ear protection or hear in noisy conditions.

Environmental: frequent exposure to loud noise; frequent exposure to chemicals, fumes, and other environmental substances; work outdoors under adverse conditions such as at night, in confined and awkward spaces, in heavy traffic, in heat, cold, and rain. Frequent coworker contact; occasionally works alone.
