These positions are open only to Colorado state residents.

There are two (2) positions; one (1) located in Grand Junction and one (1) located in Montrose.

From May through October this position works as an Engineering Physical Science Assistant III -Inspector providing support on engineering construction transportation projects.

From November through May this position works as a Transportation Maintenance Worker I performing highway maintenance work including road surface maintenance work, snow removal, structure maintenance, etc. Transportation Maintenance Workers I are on call 24 hours per day /7 days per week to respond to emergencies.

Description of Job

This announcement will be used to fill two (2) positions located at:

Engineering Support Responsibilities - 6 months per  year


As an Engineering Assistant III - Inspector, this position is assigned to the Grand Junction or Montrose Engineering Residency for six (6) months, from May through October, and performs the following major responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Inspect, measure and document quantities of work items completed by the contractor;
  • Document and certify that contractor's work is in conformance with construction plans and specifications;
  • Document various field materials tests to ensure compliance with project plans and specs;
  • Assure accurate payment for contract construction work by operating computers; utilize Site Manager Project Construction Management System, various spreadsheets and CDOT forms;
  • Calculate and check project data for final documentation;
  • Assist with the preparation of as-constructed plans;
  • Determine the locations of non-specification material(s) installed on construction projects;
  • Assist the Project Engineer in identifying and resolving contract errors, omissions, changes, claims, disputes etc. at the project level;
  • Assist the Project Engineer with schedule monitoring and analysis;
  • Attend assigned training classes and study CDOT manuals to enhance knowledge necessary to perform the job duties for the Engineering Department;
  • Regularly utilize MSOffice Suite (Word and Excel) and SAP;
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Transportation Maintenance Responsibilities- 6 months per year

As a Transportation Maintenance Worker I, this position is assigned to a Grand Junction or Montrose Maintenance Patrol for six (6) months, from November through April, and performs the following major responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Snow plow and ice removal at all hours to keep roadways clear and safe;
  • Haul and spread sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt and clay to fill washouts, roadway cracks, berms, and repair road shoulders;
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as tandem trucks, loader, backhoe, motor grader, sweepers, etc. to effectively support the skilled labor during maintenance activities;
  • Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition;
  • Complete pre- and post-trip inspections, via paper and electronically;
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair of equipment;
  • Install and/or repair guardrails, highway markers, warning signals, and highway lighting, using hand tools and power tools;
  • Remove litter, hazardous objects and debris from roadways, such as rock, mud and/or deceased animals;
  • Set out signs and cones for "traffic control safe zones" around work areas to divert traffic;
  • Perform rock fall mitigation and avalanche control, such as traffic control and snow removal from slide areas;
  • Perform minor repairs to buildings and building/grounds upkeep;
  • Inspect, clean, and repair drainage systems, bridges, tunnels, and other structures;
  • Respond to emergencies by following prescribed procedures such as stopping or slowing traffic, operating emergency vehicles, etc.;
  • Assist in signing and striping highways, such as maintaining pavement markings and reinstalling traffic signage;
  • Obtain, maintain, and use flagger certification during traffic control;
  • Maintain knowledge and skill in operating hand tools, including learning new pieces/types of tools and related technology;
  • Maintain, replace, and install signs, delineators, fence, guard rail, cable rail, concrete rail, attenuators, etc.;
  • Set up traffic control zones;
  • Operate technology systems in the equipment to help with operational decision-making, inspections, and maintenance. Example systems include Truck and Equipment Controller Systems, Maintenance Decision Support Systems (MDSS), electronic fleet management systems, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) System, etc.;
  • Maintain a state of operational readiness. Utilize technology to monitor weather conditions to be able to report to work in a timely manner and in emergency situations;
  • Perform and assist in the daily planning and scheduling of activities in assigned work area;
  • Perform inspections of worksite such as access, utilities, permitted extra-legal loads, roadway inventory, night inspections, and storm water permits;
  • Use computer software and CDOT programs to enter data and information in order to complete email, paperwork, reports, work orders, time sheets, fuel logs, supply orders, meter readings, weekly updates, and accident reports;
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Work Environment:

Engineering Support:
  • Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday daytime hours
  • Night and/or weekend shifts may be required for construction projects
  • 15% office work, 85% field work to conduct inspections of contractor's work
  • Occasional in-state/overnight travel
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles
Transportation Maintenance: 
  • Subject to call 24 hours  per day/ 7 days  per  week
  • Shift work
  • Exposure  to loud  noise
  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gasses, dusts, etc.  that  may  affect  breathing, eyes and skin
  • Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment as appropriate
  • Required to work  with  chemicals and cleaning products
  • Some  equipment requires the  use of respirators
  • Work  in close proximity to heavy  traffic
  • Use of ladders  and scissor  lifts  for heights of approximately 10 - 20'
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles
  • Frequently responds to emergencies outsider regular work  hours  and  may  work  overtime including weekends and  holidays
  • Must be willing and be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

 At a minimum this position requires:

  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience assisting professional licensed engineers on construction projects.  
  • License Requirements: A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with no restrictions on air brakes is required by October 31, 2018.


Condition of Employment:  

The following conditions must be met and maintained in order to be employed and to continue employment at CDOT in this position, unless exempted by the Maintenance Superintendent or Traffic Program Engineer.
  • Must obtain a CDL class A and B by October 31, 2018.
  • May be required to obtain a tanker endorsement within one year of the date of hire as a condition of continued employment;
  • May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider;
  • Must obtain a valid Commercial DOT Medical card within 3 months of the date of hire;
  • Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays;
  • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency;
  • May be required to live within 30 minutes of where the maintenance barn and/or equipment is located.  This is necessary in order to report for emergency work within thirty (30) minutes' driving time under adverse weather conditions, after notified to report to work.  Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to work station.
SUBSTITUTIONS

Satisfactory completion of course work from a U.S. accredited, non-correspondence college or university in engineering, engineering technology, construction management or a closely related field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis  for the required 2 years of experience assisting licensed professional engineers on construction projects.

The Exceptional Applicant will be an Engineering Assistant or Technician with proven abilities and accomplishments in the following:
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Major Responsibilities section;
  • Knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting engineering project plans;
  • Experience documenting and certifying that contractor's work is in conformance with construction plans and specifications;
  • Six or more  months of experience operating heavy equipment operation such  single  axle dump trucks, tandem axle  dump trucks, front-end loaders (3 yards or larger), bulldozers, backhoes, road  graders, paving equipment, 15' mower tractors, or farm/ranch equipment such as tractors or combines;
  • Six or more months of heavy construction/physical labor experience such as bricklayer, construction laborer, plasterer, rancher/farmer or concrete finisher;
  • Extensive experience effectively using several types of hand tools;
  • Extensive experience performing physically demanding work assignments;
  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy;
  • Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret numerical data;
  • Strong planning, organizational and time management skills;
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations;
