Salary: $13.80 - $16.84 Hourly

NOTE: We are accepting applications to fill a Part-Time (30 hours per week) vacancy in Santa Maria. The current vacancy is for the Probation Department.


Some positions that may be filled by this recruitment have been vacated as a result of a leave of absence (CS Rule 1414) and the duration of those appointments shall be subject to the return of the individuals who are on leave. A person who is appointed to a position under CS Rule 1414 may be able to transition into a regular position in the classification without re-application or re-testing, depending on the performance of the appointee and the needs of the department.
 
THE POSITION:  Under general supervision, performs a variety of tasks involved in the serving of food in a secured detention facility; cleans and maintains kitchen utensils, equipment, and work area; and performs related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

  1. Receives bulk prepared meals delivered to Juvenile Hall from local food vendor; unloads food containers at Juvenile Hall; conducts quality control of all food items along with taking food temperatures upon arriving, and refrigerates or places food containers in steam tables to maintain temperature.
  2. Prepares for serving meal in dining room; determines number to be served; counts and puts out silverware for number to be served; portions out food onto food trays; checks special dietary food trays for ordered requirements; sets up and clears tables in the dining room; counts silverware at end of meal; prepares and loads food trays for juveniles without dining room privileges.
  3. Cleans dining room and kitchen areas, including hot food warmer, with assistance from a juvenile detainee; washes, dries, stacks, and puts away trays, pans, and other kitchen utensils; cleans tables, benches, chairs, cupboards, storerooms, refrigerators, and other equipment; sweeps and mops floors, and empties garbage; maintains hygienic and sanitary standards in kitchen and dining rooms.
  4. Follows security procedures including counting silverware, activating alarms, and reporting movement of detainees.

Employment Standards

  1. Six months of experience in food set up, service, and clean up; or,
  2. Six months of a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
 
Additional Requirement: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.

Knowledge of: standard units of measure and weight for liquid and solid food to portion out required quantities; basic math; basic practices for safe food storage and prevention of contamination; safe work practices in a kitchen; kitchen and floor cleaning and sanitizing products and proper usage.
 
Ability to: use kitchen serving utensils; operate hot food warmer and storage equipment, and dishwashing equipment; use kitchen and floor cleaners and cleaning implements; read and understand security procedures and mixing instructions for cleaners; write legible requests for repairs or supplies; follow and give oral directions; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with detainees, co-workers, and other County employees.
 
Incumbents are required to work in a secured detention facility with juveniles and to lift food containers weighing up to 50 pounds. Weekend and holiday work is required.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking.Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored.Candidates' final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire.This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than eleven qualified candidates.
 
Applicants must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of six months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list and exact duration of the employment list.
