SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Fleet Supervisor and with the guidance of the Chief Mechanic, this position is responsible for performing various types of routine and skilled work in connection with the inspection, maintenance and repair of all Utility Fleet equipment, stationary equipment, small equipment, including any associated components.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Other duties may be assigned. Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.
- Perform all duties safely, responsibly, and proficiently observing all safety and health rules
- Inspect, diagnose, and perform repair of automotive, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and structural deficiencies on small, mid-size, and heavy equipment
- Perform preventive maintenance activities and servicing equipment
- Source, read, and effectively interpret technical service data, schematics, and mechanical drawings
- Identify parts and materials necessary to accomplish the maintenance and repair of equipment
- Utilize computerized maintenance management systems to generate and research fleet work orders, monitor inventory levels, and review prior or scheduled maintenance activity
- Submit records and written reports of work performed, including work orders, parts lists, invoices, and other paperwork as required
- Observe, evaluate, assist, and document work performed by outside service repair centers
- Perform basic mobile equipment air conditioning system diagnosis and repair
- Regular attendance and timeliness is required
- Must possess a valid driver's license
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Required- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of private, public, military, or trade school curriculum that includes theory and on-the-job work
- Minimum of two (2) years hands-on mechanical experience with hydraulic, electrical, automotive, and mechanical systems on small, mid-size and large equipment (mobile and stationary) in a commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting
- One (1) year experience in metal fabrication and welding
- Must have or be able to obtain forklift certification within six (6) months of employment
- Must have or be able to obtain the following within one (1) year of employment:
- Class B UST (Underground Storage Tank) License from Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality
- EPA-Approved Section 608 Universal Certification for refrigerants
- May consider any equivalent combination of education, certification, experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work
Preferred- Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology or field related degree/certification
- Five (5) years of related professional experience
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:- Organization and time management skills with ability to determine workload priorities and meet deadlines
- Ability to read and comprehend documents such as Safety Data Sheets, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department
- Familiar with proper procedures for working with chemicals and safe disposal of hazardous materials
- Proficient with the use of hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment
- Proficient with gas and arc welding equipment
- Experienced with the use of diagnostic equipment, mobile lift equipment, and other trade related tools or equipment
- Intermediate computer skills, including the ability to perform computer-aided electronic system diagnosis
- Ability to perform basic math, including but not limited to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Ability to effectively work without immediate supervision
- Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing
- Speed, accuracy, problem solving and analytical ability
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, climb, walk, talk and hear. Occasionally sit, use hands to handle objects, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must also stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is also required to use the sense of smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, peripheral and color vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also necessary.
The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 75 pounds.
Work Schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to work overtime and respond for emergency repairs when necessary.

While performing the duties of this position the employee may be frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may work near moving mechanical parts, vehicular traffic, in high precarious places, and is at risk of electrical shock. The employee is exposed to wet, humid conditions and extreme heat or cold (both weather and non-weather related).
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud.
