The County of Sonoma Department of Health Services seeks qualified candidates for a Part-Time (20 hours per week) Animal Health Technician position.

About the Position

As an Animal Health Technician, you will assist veterinarians with the provision of healthcare to animals. Duties include:
  • Conducting examinations
  • Administering daily treatments, medications, and vaccines
  • Assisting with surgeries
  • Performing humane euthanasia
  • Assessing temperament of animals
  • Implementing behavioral modification plans as directed by the shelter supervisor
  • Assisting in the maintenance of sanitary kennels and shelter facilities
  • Leading the work of volunteers
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Experience working as an Animal Health Technician
  • A Registered Veterinary Technician license (formerly known as an Animal Health Technician Certificate) issued by the Veterinary Medical Board
  • A Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP)

Please Note: This position requires the ability to work flexible hours; which may include weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.

About the Sonoma County Animal Shelter

The Animal Shelter is committed to serving the public in the care and well-being of animals, both domestic and livestock, throughout the unincorporated areas of Sonoma County, the City of Santa Rosa, and the Town of Windsor. The Shelter offers diverse services such as finding homes for adoptable animals, providing shelter for stray animals, offering assistance to owners and finders of lost animals, providing limited veterinary care, and maintaining pet licensing. In addition, the Shelter sponsors various community education and outreach programs throughout the year. The Shelter's field services include rescue and care of injured or distressed animals, rabies control, investigation of reports of animal abuse and neglect, and the enforcement of animal regulation laws and ordinances.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and experience: Any combination of education and experience which would provide for the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, two years of experience performing paramedical tasks in a veterinary office or animal shelter or possession of a valid Animal Health Technician Certificate issued by the California State Board of Examiners would provide the knowledge and abilities.

License: Possession of an Animal Health Technician Certificate is highly desirable. Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Special Requirements: Completion of P.O.S.T. course work and certification in the use of firearms and exercising powers of arrest as specified in Penal Code 830.9 may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of: methods, techniques, and medication and pharmaceuticals used in the care and treatment of animals; physical and behavioral characteristics of common domestic animals and livestock and characteristics of common diseases.

Ability to: learn State laws and County ordinances relating to the care, treatment, and impounding of animals; handle animals properly and perform the work in a humane manner; willingness to conduct euthanasia of animals by direct injection; recognize symptoms of rabies and other common diseases of animals; properly and legibly complete necessary forms; work tactfully and effectively with co-workers, staff of other agencies working with animals, and the general public.
