The City of Aurora is seeking candidates who can perform new water line testing and inspections for the Operations Division of the Aurora Water Department. 
 
Aurora Water Mission Statement

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees and performs various testing as it relates to new water lines and modified existing water mains
  • Assists contractors with all phases of water main construction
  • Acts as a field consultant with contractor during pre-construction meetings
  • Coordinates testing process with various city sections
  • Prepares various reports, communicates verbally and in writing with customers, contractors, and staff
  • Maintains and updates records
  • Reads and interprets maps and construction drawings to mark utility lines within accuracy requirements of State laws
  • Performs field surveys of facilities to determine degree of hazard and identify cross-connections
  • Operates and maintains assigned equipment, utility structures, and equipment
  • Responds to customer complaints in a professional manner
  • Operates specialized equipment and tools related to assigned functions
  • May operate equipment in performing other utilities work
  • Enforces department and city policies and procedures
  • Locates utility lines
  • Assists with snow removal activities
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The hiring department may include job related experience, training, education or license and certification preferences at the time of recruitment. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience:
At least 3 years of related water utility maintenance experience including distribution or collection operation practices; reading and interpretation of construction drawings. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge:
Knowledge of utility and AWWA standards and specification and fire protection; practice and techniques of assigned maintenance functions.

Abilities:
Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time; understand oral and written instructions; operate various types of maintenance and construction equipment; read and interpret construction plans and map books; measure, locate, and mark underground utility locations based on plan information and records; communicate location information and resolve conflicts with field construction personnel. Ability to work overtime

Skills:
Basic drafting/drawing skills.

Licenses, Certificates or Equipment Required:
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) 
  • Driver's license with a good driving history
  • Colorado Water Distribution Level II
  • Colorado Wastewater Collection Level I
  • Colorado Wastewater Collection Level II
  • Colorado Water Distribution Level I
  • **Or the ability to obtain certifications within department guidelines.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds; considerable walking and standing; frequent pushing, pulling, bending, stooping/crouching, and climbing; considerable hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of tools, equipment, and vehicles; speech communication to give information and vision to read manuals and gauges and operate equipment; hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals.

Work Environment: Works primarily outdoors in both hot and cold weather with exposure to noise, dust, and chemicals. Some work may be performed in confined spaces.

Equipment Used: Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to construction and maintenance; operates vehicles such as dump trucks and pickups
