Description
- Under direct supervision, conducts routine inspections and investigations related to the enforcement of environmental health regulations.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the entry level class in the Environmental Health Specialist series. Incumbents in this classification receive direct supervision, training and perform routine investigations and inspections. Promotion to Environmental Health Specialist I requires a valid certificate of registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, issued by the State of California Department of Health Services, Environmental Health Services Section, and is considered on a merit basis subject to recommendation by the Director of Environmental Health Services and approval by the Director of Personnel.
Failure to obtain the required registration within a 36-month period will result in termination of employment. Essential Functions
- Performs routine inspections and investigations; and assists with complex inspections of food processing and handling establishments, such as grocery stores, restaurants, commercial processing and packing plants, or of houses and dwelling units, schools and public buildings, small water systems and water well installations, sewage disposal systems, solid waste facilities, and other public and private installations.
- Collects samples of food, water, beverages and other matter for laboratory tests.
- May assist in advising or instructing individuals, businesses, institutions, and public officials in the prevention and correction of unhealthful conditions.
- Prepares records and reports on inspections and violations.
- Perform other related job functions as assigned.

- Possession of a letter of qualifications issued by the State of California, Department of Health Services, Environmental Health Services section, verifying applicant is eligible to enter an approved Environmental Health Specialist training program.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Within 36 months from the date of employment, incumbents in the Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training classification are required to possess a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist, issued by the State of California Department of Health Services, Environmental Health Services section. Knowledge of: the basic biological principles used in environmental health work.Ability to: learn and apply provisions of the Health and safety Code, principles and environmental health science, and methods and practices used in inspecting and correcting otherwise unhealthful conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; prepare clear, concise records and reports. This examination will establish an eligible list from which one (1) immediate appointment will be made at the Environmental Health Services Department / Public Health Services Department. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
ORAL EXAM (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of appraising training, experience, interest and personal fitness for the position. Applicants must attain at least a 70% score of each phase of the examination process.
