Description

Hennepin County's Transportation Department seeks a full-time Traffic Signal Technician. This position will work in the Traffic Signal Shop which is responsible for maintaining traffic signals, flashers, and electronic traffic control devices on Hennepin County roads.

This is a limited duration (temporary), benefit earning position lasting up to two years. This posting will remain open until filled.

The Transportation Department administers all functions associated with the county highway system. This department develops, operates, and maintains a safe and effective highway system throughout Hennepin County. The Hennepin County Public Works facility is located at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN (seven miles west of Interstate 494 on State Highway 55). There is no public transportation available to this location.


The duties and responsibilities of this position include:
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and install traffic signal control/coordination systems in the shop and in the field.
  • Install, program, and maintain video detection equipment and software.
  • Build, test, and inspect traffic signal controller cabinets.
  • Maintain, repair, and test copper wire, fiber optic interconnect, emergency vehicle pre-emption (EVP) systems, and railroad pre-emption.
  • Maintain and update signal timing records, signal plans, and equipment records.
  • Monitor signal systems on a daily basis to ensure proper operation; identify traffic flow problems; troubleshoot system failures.
  • Participate in the after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call rotation.
  • Receive and respond to traffic signal trouble calls by phone and through e-mail.
  • Obtain data including traffic counts, distances, lane usage, and speeds to develop or modify coordinated or isolated traffic signal systems.
  • Create new or more efficient signal coordination and/or timing programs to solve traffic flow and/or safety problems.
Best Qualified Candidates will have:
  • One of the following:
    • Completed at least one technical college course in electronics and two years or more of work experience in electronic maintenance, repair, and testing.
    • Completion of an associate degree program in electronics/computer technology and field experience in traffic signal maintenance.
    • Note: Experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Availability to work on-call hours during evenings, weekends, holidays and ability to respond to an emergency call within two hours.
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain an unlicensed electrician registration with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Functions in electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, and solid state devices.
    • Traffic signal timing terminology and methods.
    • Software; Aries and Highway Capacity Manual.
  • Ability to:
    • Work independently and make decisions with minor supervision and also to work with a group in a team setting.
    • Use a personal computer and traffic management software.
    • Read complex electrical diagrams and plans.
    • Work outdoors in all weather conditions at heights of up to 40 feet and to lift up to 50 pounds.
