Position Summary

Performs general manual tasks on a seasonal temporary basis for road, engineering, fleet maintenance, parks and building facilities crews. Observes safety and traffic rules and laws.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities

a) Traffic control or "flagger" for road maintenance functions. Provides directions to motorist.

b) Laborer - Performs heavy manual labor, digging ditches, cleaning and installing culverts or drain tiles, removing obstacles from the roadway and adjacent area, hand loading and unloading all types of material, cutting of brush and small trees, feeds brush and tree limbs into a chipper. Performs simple manual work connected with asphalt patching or chip sealing of road ways, repairs guard rail, installs roadway signs and picks up litter along roadways.

c) Bridge repair - Simple manual work cleaning decks, cutting brush, hand placing rock in gabions and minor concrete work.

d) Building repair - Manual work in repair and minor maintenance of county buildings including janitorial work, painting, and yard maintenance.

e) Fleet maintenance - Performs simple duties such as washing, waxing and vacuum of various pieces of equipment. May work alongside a mechanic as a helper.

f) Engineering - Works with survey crew on road projects performing duties such as cutting brush, traffic control, rod holder, traffic counts and weighing of trucks.

g) Parks - Performs various park duties such as garbage collection, janitorial of restrooms, cutting of brush, mowing of grass, picnic table and fireplace maintenance, and sign maintenance.

h) Office - Performs various routine tasks associated with office operation including filing, sorting, data entry, copying etc.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSES/CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:

Graduation from a senior high school or GED. Valid Oregon driver's license with excellent driving record.

SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS:

Observes safety and traffic rules and regulations. Ability to comprehend and pass a "flaggers" certification course. Ability to receive and give directions. Ability to get along with public and fellow employees. Reliable, works on tasks without direct supervision. Maintains tools and equipment. Works in a safe and efficient manner. Operates small tools such as weed eaters, power saws and lawn mowers. Good physical condition with the strength and stamina to perform heavy manual labor. Extended periods of standing, lifting, carrying, digging in all kinds of weather and ground conditions.

JOB CONDITIONS:

Extended periods of heavy manual labor in all kinds of out-of-doors adverse weather, high noise levels, close proximity to machinery, high personal risk and hazards to workers.
