We are accepting applications to fill one (1) full-time Staff Nurse position in Lompoc at the Lompoc Health Care Center

About this position: Under direction, the Staff Nurse provides professional nursing services and are responsible for the operational activities of primary care and/or public health clinics; performs related duties as required.

Lompoc Health Care Center
The Lompoc Health Care Center (LHCC) is the largest of Santa Barbara County Public Health Department's five clinics and is the medical home for more than 10,000 patients. We offer high quality health care including Adult Primary Care and Internal Medicine, Pediatric Primary Care, comprehensive Women's Health Care, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Well Child Visits and a variety immunization services for children and adults. Located in an area of Lompoc easily accessible by private and public transportation as well as within walking distance for many patients, we have been serving the low-income, uninsured and underinsured members of our community for many years. The LHCC staff and providers take great pride and satisfaction in serving our community and providing excellent, consistent and stable care to the many patients who rely on us for all of their healthcare needs. Now embarking on a mission to incorporate the essential tenants of the Affordable Care Act, the LHCC also integrates Behavioral Health Care into our medical setting, again demonstrating our commitment to serving the needs of the patients and our community. 

The IDEAL CANDIDATE will: 
 
  • Have two (2) or more years of nursing experience in OB/GYN, Family Medicine, Pediatrics or Ambulatory care.
  • Have the ability to be flexible and problem solve in a fast paced environment.
  • Have experience working with the under-served population.

Examples of Duties


  1. Assesses physical and psychosocial needs of patients and makes appropriate nursing interventions; assists physicians and health care practitioners with examinations, treatments and other procedures.
  2. Educates and counsels patients and their families on procedures, medical care and sensitive health issues, including need for follow up; provides informational literature and makes referrals to mental health, social services and other agencies as needed.
  3. Obtains and prepares a variety of specimens for laboratory analysis; schedules, administers, and interprets results of pregnancy, PPD's, hearing, glucose, and other tests; administers medications and immunizations; performs special treatment such as mistogens, updrafts, wound care and catheterization.
  4. Prepares and maintains a variety of pertinent records reflecting patients condition, medication and treatment, and other records required by state and federal governments.
  5. Assists in the orientation and training of professional and nonprofessional personnel in specific clinic operations and, as necessary, technical procedures.
  6. Maintains inventory of medical supplies, medications, and vaccines; ensures that examination and/or consultation rooms are properly equipped and supplied.

Employment Standards

Possession of a valid Registered Nurse license issued by the California State Board of Registered Nursing.

Knowledge of: the principles, practices, and skilled techniques of nursing; symptomology and disease processes; general nutrition; medical equipment operation; use and effects of medications and immunizations; laws governing nursing; health education techniques and practices; interviewing and counseling techniques; community health and social services; clinic operation and procedures.

Ability to: evaluate and assess the need for nursing and/or medical services; exercise independent judgment; work with individuals and families in a clinical setting to resolve health problems; perform skilled nursing tasks; anticipate patient's needs; demonstrate tact, diplomacy, patience, and compassion; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; comply with nursing policies, protocols, and program regulations; prepare and maintain accurate medical records with appropriate documentation; recognize and respect limits of confidential information; learn and make referrals to local and regional providers of social, medical, and/or other specialized services; communicate effectively with people of diverse socio-economic and ethnic origins.

Supplemental Information

APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS:  

  1. Review Applications: To determine those applicants who meet the employment standards and are willing to work under the specific job conditions.
  2. Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking: A candidate's final score and rank on the eligible list will be determined by the information provided on their supplemental questionnaire. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than 11 candidates.

Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the supplemental questionnaire to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list.

Appointee will be subject to a post-offer medical examination.

Appointee must also satisfactorily complete a (12) twelve month probationary period.

Once a conditional offer of employment has been made, the selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a background check, which includes a conviction history check, and satisfactory reference checks.

Selectees for employment must, as a condition of employment, sign a statement agreeing to comply with Section 11166 of the California Penal Code relating to child abuse, elder/dependent adult abuse, and physical violence abuse reporting.

The Public Health Department (PHD) requires all employees working in direct contact with patients or clients in a high risk environment to comply with the PHD Employee Immunizations policy.  This can be accomplished by providing documentation of immunizations, submitting laboratory immune titers demonstrating adequate immunity, or obtaining required vaccinations.  A list of requirements, based on the specific program, will be sent at the time an offer letter is presented to the selected candidate(s) and initial documentation will be required at this time.

NOTE: Veteran's preference credit is applicable for this recruitment (5 points for veterans, 10 points for disabled veterans). To be eligible for this credit, you must be applying for this position within five years from your most recent date of: (1) honorable discharge from active military service; or, (2) discharge from a military or veterans' hospital where treatment and confinement were for a disability incurred during active military service; or, (3) completion of education or training funded by a Federal Educational Assistance Act. No time limit exists for veterans with 30% or more disability.
