Description
- The Orange County Health Department has openings for Temporary Environmental Health Specialist. These positions performs professional environmental health work in the promotion of public health through education, surveillance, consultation, inspection, and enforcement of State, local, and Federal environmental health laws and regulations.

This position will primarily perform Rule .1961 Table V inspections in support of the Well and Septic Program. Typical Qualifications
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of environmental health theories, principles, and practices.
Knowledge of well and septic system design and legal requirements.
Knowledge of state and federal environmental laws and regulations.
Knowledge of food safety principles and practices, food microbiology, food science, sanitary design practices, and hazard analysis critical control point measures.
Knowledge of County ordinances and department policies and procedures.
Knowledge of wastewater and well construction standards and processes.
Knowledge of water chemistry, hydrology, microbiology, and water treatment systems and capabilities.
Skill in planning and prioritizing work.
Skill in decision making and problem solving.
Skill in conducting interviews and investigations.
Skill in analyzing soil and water samples.
Skill in using a computer and associated software applications.
Skill in using surveying and measurement tools, instruments, gages, and meters.
Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's degree with major course work in biology, environmental health or a related field including a minimum of 30 semester hours (or as stated in NC GS 90A-53) in physical or biological sciences and two years of experience in environmental health; or a Bachelor's degree in environmental health from a program accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Environmental Health Curricula of the National Environmental Health Association and one year of environmental health experience.
Must possess or be able to obtain Registered Sanitarian certification by the North Carolina Board of Sanitarian Examiners.
Requires delegation of authority by NC Department of Health & Human Services to administer state rules and laws in the appropriate program area(s).
May be required to possess additional certification(s) as deemed necessary by the County.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Supplemental Information
