Service Worker

This is an hourly position, limited to working approximately 29 hours per week or 1000 hours annually, whichever comes first.  This position is non-benefited and is designated as a non-classified, at-will position.

Service Workers perform semi-skilled labor type tasks involving the set up, clean up and maintenance for the staging of various events at the Centre Plaza. Assignments involve setting up chairs, tables and stages; cleaning floor area of debris; unloading supplies; and performing minor maintenance necessary prior to the staging of events.

The ideal candidate must be agile of the mind and able to change course quickly; a great listener who can receive a lot of information from Event Coordinators, clients, vendors and attendees; all the while, staying calm with a friendly demeanor.

All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications of the position will be placed on an eligible list and invited to a selection interview with the Community & Economic Development Department.

The Human Resources Department reserves the right to revise the testing process to best meet the needs of the City.

Essential an other important responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

Set up tables, chairs and other portable items used during various events.

Clean and sanitize restrooms; sweep, mop, and clean areas of debris.

Perform minor repair work of an emergency nature on broken chairs, tables, or other portable equipment.

Load and unload supplies and other special materials used in the staging of a special event.

Operate light equipment, hand and power tools, and other mechanical apparatus.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.

Work hours are flexible including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Safe work practices

Tools, materials and equipment used in general maintenance work.

Ability to:

Accurately, understand and quickly follow oral and written instructions.

Perform medium-heavy manual labor, including but not limited to occasionally lifting and carrying up to 75 lbs. of weight.

Preform service and maintenance activities.

Establish and maintain cooperative, working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

Work irregular hours as required.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of education and experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Volunteer or paid experience involving the staging of special events; including banquets, concerts, or other convention center activities is desirable.

Training:

Ability to read and write at a level necessary for acceptable job performance, including the ability to follow and interpret written instructions and to perform basic arithmetic.

Working Conditions

Indoor and outdoor environment; exposure to noise, dust, and dirt.

Physical Conditions

Job duties may require maintaining condition necessary for medium-heavy lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, walking, climbing, or standing for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized vehicles and equipment.
