Definition
- An individual in this position acts as a shift commander and supervises police sergeants, police officers and other civilian employees. The role involves assuming control of police activities in major emergencies such as fires and civil disturbances in the absence of a police captain. He or she analyzes data and makes certain that police manpower is being used productively and in the right areas; oversees and assists in the response to emergency telephone calls and takes the appropriate action.
Examples of Work
- Manage shift personnel by establishing goals and objectives; and ensure duties and responsibilities of all officers are carried out efficiently and effectively.
- Conduct performance evaluations; mentor employees, manage work assignments; approve work schedules; resolve operational issues; review and approve written documentation prepared by officers; perform inspections of officers and assigned equipment; and provide counseling and discipline as needed.
- Address administrative issues by providing inter-divisional advice as needed; compile statistical reports for division commander; handle special assignments as directed.
- Recommend policy and procedure modifications; investigate minor citizen complaints; refer non-routine matters to the appropriate person; coordinate in-service training of personnel assigned to shift; serve as jail administrator; design and instruct in-service training; and provide assistance in the department hiring process as assigned.
- Conduct background investigations; manage in-car videotape program; manage the repair and upkeep of all in-car cameras.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Subject to 24 hour recall.
Education, Experience, or Certification
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate, and a minimum of two (2) years continuous service as a Missouri City Police Department Sergeant and Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification are required.
