Job Summary
Under general direction, provides high quality and fast paced medical care of animals in the shelter; performs clinical, laboratory and surgical veterinary services for sheltered animals with high volume spay, neuter and other surgeries, including pre- and post-operative care; ensures all impounded animals receive prompt and proper medical care and continued monitoring for individual / herd health and welfare; performs examinations, diagnose, create treatment plans and monitor treatments as needed along with emergency triage and stabilization for sick / injured animals; ensures accurate and thorough record keeping for each individual animal treated; manages administrative and field operations of the division, oversees activities of Animal Control Officers, citizen complaints, off-site adoptions, grant programs and liaison with community groups and other departments. Performs other related work as required.
Duties
Plans, coordinates, administers and directs long and short-term activities of Animal Control Division including but not limited to budget preparation and implementation; both field and shelter operations; participation with outside agencies and other internal departments. Provides expected customer service to citizens and through staff, ensures proper and humane care for sheltered animals. Generates, and/or reviews reports, correspondence, and associated documents required of Animal Control.
Monitors the personnel and equipment resources of Animal Control. Identifies, investigates, and resolves any conflicts of Animal Control personnel. Performs personnel related duties including hiring, training, coaching, performance evaluations, and discipline.
Shelter Veterinary duties, to include but not limited to: examines, diagnoses and treats injured and sick sheltered animals; assists in the prevention and control of disease in sheltered animals; assists in the development and /or review of sanitation, treatment and euthanasia protocols; spays or neuters dogs and cats prior to being adopted
Responsible for daily evaluation of quarantined animals; Consults with the public and medical community concerning rabies and other zoonotic diseases as necessary as the Local Rabies Control Authority.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED:
1. DVM / VMD or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited School of Veterinary Medicine;
2. Valid license to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners;
3. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
PREFERRED:- Six months surgical experience in spay and neutering of dogs and cats;
- Computer proficiency / familiarity with Microsoft Office programs / software;
- Knowledge of the practice of Shelter veterinary medicine;
- Managerial / supervisory experience
Additional Information
Knowledge of, and adheres to all Federal, State, County, and local ordinances and laws, as well as City Policies and Procedures, and Department Written Directives. Proven supervisory/management skills and communication skills are required, including ability to communicate effectively through public speaking. Must have ability to effectively supervise work of others. Must be able to effectively operate and maintain facilities for animals. Must have ability to work some evenings and weekends. Ability to get along appropriately with co-workers and the public.
