Description

The Umpire/Referee is responsible for ensuring that participants in organized sporting events adhere to the rules of play on the field/court during games. The employee is required to perform similar or related duties as directed or requested.  Under the administrative direction of the Scotland County Parks & Recreation Athletics Staff. The employee functions primarily independently, accepting assignments, attending scheduled appointments and reporting back. Employee is expected to utilize professional judgment and render expert opinions with respect to the sporting event for which s/he has been retained. Work is generally reviewed only for technical adequacy, appropriateness of actions or decisions, and conformance with rules, policies or other requirements.

  • Makes calls and instructs players on the rules of game during games
  • Provides communication to and from coaches, participants and parents
  • Assist participants, respond to questions and concerns
  • Maintains a safe and positive playing environment
  • Complete required reports and records
  • Notifies Coordinator of problems and concerns regarding facilities, coaches, participants, and/or spectators
  • Notifies Coordinator of needed supplies and equipment

Typical Qualifications

Position requires detailed knowledge of specific sport and game rules. Prior experience preferred but not required. Specific sport training and play experience may provide sufficient required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of the specific sport for which the employee is hired is essential. Knowledge of the recreational sports equipment may be or become necessary. Abilities: Ability to see and hear is necessary. Ability to read and write in English is required. Ability to interact effectively and appropriately with the public and other personnel, assess needs and develop practices to suit the needs and interests of program participants is required. Must be able to physically perform outdoor recreational activities and to manage tasks in a detailed, efficient and safe manner. Must be able to communicate and work effectively with program participants of all ages.
