Job Description
- Under general supervision, travels to and from 6 RRSC's and sorts, segregates and packs household hazardous waste for transportation, pours off smaller containers of flammable liquids, ensures sites have the needed materials and supplies to operate safely and efficiently. Accept recyclables and hazardous wastes from individual customers and small businesses qualifying as Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG). Classifies, sorts, and packs non-hazardous household wastes and classifies, properly contains, and packs hazardous wastes. Maintain the Resource Recovery center in a neat, clean, and organized condition.
This is a full-time, benefited position working from the Public Health Department and Resource Recovery Service Centers in Holland, MI. Must be able to work weekend and night shifts when necessary. Essential Job Functions
While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee:
- Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to read markings on recyclable materials and labels on hazardous waste containers.
- Must be able to descend to and ascend from floor and ground level to remove litter and contain small spills.
- Must have sufficient strength to remove snow from walkways and other areas with manual shovels as well as with snow blowers.
- Must be able to move recyclable containers weighing up to 50 lbs with or without mechanical or other assistance.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and other airborne contaminants, as well as inclement weather.
- Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment.
Required Education, Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED combined with two years of progressively responsible employment in a position requiring customer service skills.
Additional Requirements and Information
The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge and skills:
- Reading proficiency in order to read and comprehend written instructions, labels on recyclable materials and hazardous waste containers, MSDS data sheets on other notices.
- General mathematical skills in order to record weights and volumes of solid and liquid materials received.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures for processing hazardous materials into the center.
- Ability to work as a member of a team.
- Commitment to providing quality service to customers.
- Ability to interact positively and constructively with customers, supervisors, waste haulers, and members of the general public with widely diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and varying levels of communications skills.
Licenses and Certifications:- Must have a valid motor vehicle license.
- If not currently certified, must be able to possess 40 hour HAZWOPER certification within 8 months of employment.
