The Roads Service Division, Maintenance Section, is currently recruiting for a Traffic Signal Technician to support the Traffic Signal work unit. The King County Roads Service Division designs, builds, operates and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County. The division is committed to ensuring the county's transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road and 182 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

WHO MAY APPLY: This recruiting effort is open to all qualified King County career service employees who are members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, (I.B.E.W.) Local 77, King County career service employees, and the general public. First consideration is for lateral movement of current career service applicants, holding the position of Traffic Signal Technician, who are members of I.B.E.W. Local 77. This recruitment is opened until filled however first screening of applications received will begin on  April 26, 2018.

SELECTION PROCESS: Applicants identified as being qualified will be invited to participate in a written examination, a practical field examination, and an oral interview. Candidates invited to this next phase of the recruitment process will be asked to provide a driving abstract.

The purpose of this recruitment is to create a list of competitive candidates for Term Limited Temporary (TLT) and/or Special Duty positions, as well as future vacant full-time regular positions as they become available.  This list will remain effective for one (1) year from the date it was created.

WORK LOCATION: Traffic Maintenance Facility, 155 Monroe Ave., NE, Building B, Renton, WA and fieldwork throughout King County.

WORK SCHEDULE: The regularly scheduled working hours are Monday through Friday; 6:30 am – 3:00 pm; 40 hours a week. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore is eligible for overtime. Mandatory overtime, weekends, on-call and standby may be required.

Job Duties

The responsibilities of this position include installing, maintaining, repairing and inspecting traffic signal and street lighting systems. This position performs journey-level traffic signal technician construction/electrical work. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Install, maintain, repair and inspect traffic signal and street lighting systems:
    • Repair and maintain wood and steel poles, energized overhead and underground cable, conduit and wiring system
    • Replace lamps, clean and adjust optical components of signal displays and inspect traffic signal hardware, wiring and cabling
    • Install wood poles, span wires, cables and conductors and electrical service equipment
    • Operate line type truck and manlift over traffic
    • Install or replace oversize street name signs over and off roadway
    • Install underground conduit and junction boxes
    • Install structural concrete foundations for steel signal and lighting standards, signal controllers and electrical service interconnect cabinets
    • Troubleshoot a large variety of gas discharge, LED street lighting systems, electrical services and control cabinet
    • Document all work and equipment repair and changes

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Minimum two (2) years related work experience
  • Ability to perform Inside and/or Outside job duties of Traffic Signal Technician position
  • Skill in electronic use and repair
  • Skill in database administration
  • Skill in safely operating vehicles and equipment
  • Skill in reading plans and specifications
  • Skill in oral and written communications
  • Ability to work & operate a bucket truck/manlift up to 60' height
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently without direct supervision
  • Ability to have predictable and reliable attendance
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued

NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid Washington State driver license
  • Valid Washington State CDL–Class B is required for all Traffic Signal Technicians selected for the Outside Signal Tech position.
  • As a condition of employment for jobs in this classification, as required by federal regulations, the applicant selected must submit to drug testing and test negative for presence of controlled substances; sign a Consent Form for Release of Information for each employer for the past three (3) years; and successfully pass a background check for Alcohol and Controlled Substances testing, and a CDL background information check.
  • An offer of employment will be contingent on the success of a pre-employment physical examination, which may include an x-ray of the lower back and audiogram.
  • Ability to obtain flagger's card within thirty (30) days of hire
  • •Bucket truck capacity restrictions require 300 lb. weight limit
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Maintenance Electrician Certificate
  • Level 2 IMSA Certification
