Description

Supervises and participates in the painting, fabricating and installing of traffic signs and pavement markings; and performs other related duties as required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics:
 
This class differs from that of Traffic Marker-Sign Painter I in that the Traffic Marker-Sign Painter II supervises and participates in the painting, fabricating and installing of traffic signs and pavement markings; whereas the Traffic Marker-Sign Painter I performs a variety of skilled work in the painting, fabrication and installation of traffic signs and pavement markings.

This class differs from that of Traffic Signs and Markings Supervisor in that the Traffic Marker-Sign Painter II supervises and participates in the painting, fabricating and installing of traffic signs and pavement markings; whereas the Traffic Signs and Markings Supervisor supervises work crews engaged in a variety of traffic signs and markings activities which involve the preparation, fabrication and erection of traffic signs, painting traffic signs and markings, and the maintenance of such visual aids to motorists.

Examples of Duties

  • Plans and lays out work for painting and installing traffic signs and painting pavement markings;
  • Estimates time and material;
  • Makes work assignments, issues instructions, and reviews completed work for compliance with instructions and satisfactory work performance;
  • Supervises and participates in the repair and installation of new signs, painting and repainting of signs, and painting pavement markings;
  • Supervises and participates in stencil layout, painting and color scheme in accordance with traffic safety standards;
  • Selects and mixes paints, takes inventories of signs in stock and insures maintenance of adequate stock;
  • Assists in keeping time and material records;
  • May approve issuance of signs;
  • Requisitions and purchases supplies and equipment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience: (1) Graduation from high school and two years of journey level work experience in sign painting and pavement marking; or (2) any equivalent combination of training and experience .
 
License Requirement: Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3).
 
Knowledge of: methods, tools, equipment, materials and supplies used in sign painting and pavement marking; safety precautions and practices applicable to adverse field conditions such as traffic and weather; common occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the trade; traffic codes applicable to traffic signs and markings; principles and practices of supervision.
 
Ability to: plan, assign, coordinate and review the work of subordinates; estimate time and painting materials and equipment needed to accomplish work assignment; give and follow oral and written instructions; deal effectively with others; operate and instruct others in the use of spray painting equipment, vacuum heat applicator, GSP sign making computer, single and double gun motorized paint machine, etc.; perform heavy lifting, moving and other manual work.
