DESCRIPTION

The City of Torrance Home Improvement Program (HIP) is looking for team players who want to work in a physically active environment to acquire skills in the exterior painting process and all of its related preparation process!

This hands-on work experience will provide HIP Trainees with basic paint techniques, safety procedures, and appropriate use of tools and materials.  Work sites will include residential properties in the City of Torrance.
 
Job Duties & Responsibilities
The following duties represent the principal job duties; however, they are not all inclusive.
  • Operates a variety of hand tools and power equipment;
  • Sets up and/or cleans up for various operations or projects;
  • Assists in removing obstacles, debris and litter;
  • Loading and unloads supplies and equipment;
  • Wash, strip, scrape, sand and patch holes and cracks and prepare surfaces for painting and finishing.

Hours: This is a part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. Hours are approximately 30 hours per week during the months of June - September, and 20 hours per week from September - May. This position will be expected to be available to work between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the knowledge and skills required is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
 
Graduation from high school or attainment of GED or CHSPE certificate, or enrolled in Trade School is highly desirable.

No specific experience is required.

Ideal Candidate
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess:

  • Strong work ethic;
  • Desire to learn and work hard in a physically active environment;
  • Dependable;
  • Available to work up to thirty (30) hours a week.
