Job Responsibilities

The Department of Mental Health is a drug-free workplace.  All candidates will be required to pass a mandatory pre-employment drug test.
 
This position is located at the Department of Mental Health Crafts-Farrow, 7901 Farrow Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.

Perform professional grounds maintenance tasks as assigned on all South Carolina Department of Mental campuses. Complete detailed landscaping tasks, to include pesticide and fertilizer applications, and irrigation repair in a safe and efficient manner. Perform preventative maintenance on equipment. Make request of needed supplies or equipment. Operate assigned vehicle or equipment in a safe and courteous manner. Other duties as assigned. 
 

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements:  A high school diploma and custodial, groundskeeping or maintenance experience directly related to the area of employment.
Agency Requirements: High school diploma and valid South Carolina Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

A understanding of the work required to provide professional ground maintenance and a desire to do five (5) years of supervisory level experience in landscaping. Extensive knowledge of pesticides used in the landscaping/horticulture industry. The knowledge to identify common plants used in southern landscapes by correct botanical name. Demonstrate ways to calibrate liquid and granular chemical/fertilizer application equipment. Candidate should have or obtain a non-commercial Pesticide Applicators License within 180 days of hire. 

Additional Comments

Must be available to work overtime and weekends when necessary. On call to provide emergency services. Must able to work in weather extremes (heat. cold, snow, ice, rain, etc.)
