Purpose
This job is responsible for assisting with operating a wastewater treatment plant.
Essential Job Functions
- Operates the city's wastewater treatment plants.Collects and analyzes samples; performs pH, dissolved oxygen, and suspended solids tests.Monitors and adjust plants operations based on microscopic analysis and laboratory results.Makes adjustments and changes to hydraulic and chemical processes.Calibrates instruments and equipment, including a pH meter and dissolved oxygen meter; maintains assigned tools and equipment.Documents findings; maintains logs and spreadsheets.Operates a multiple hearth incinerator to destroy bio-solids removed in the treatment process.Performs visual inspection of water samples for color, microscopic particles, and insects.Operates a belt filter press and sand filter; cleans clarifiers and filters.Operates and maintains the disinfection system.Operates heavy equipment, including a dump truck, tractor, backhoe, loader, and forklift.Handles caustic materials, including chlorine cylinders.Collects and analyzes samples from waste hauled to the facility.Maintains and cleans ash slurry system.Performs grounds maintenance duties, including mowing, weeding, and applying insecticides.Remains on call for after-hours emergencies.Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED; with six months work experience in the field of public water treatment or distribution or industrial wet process; OR a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Micro Biology, Engineering, or Math; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must have normal or correctable color vision. Valid driver's license required. Shift work including nights, weekends and holidays also required. Must successfully complete mandatory Basic Water/Wastewater training course and obtain Georgia Water/Wastewater Operator Class 3 Certification within sixteen (16) months of employment. Failure to secure the required certification will result in separation from employment.
Additional RequirementsBackground investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; a motor vehicle report will be conducted, and driving history must meet the standards outlined by the City of Savannah; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment. The final score on this examination will consist of a rating of education and experience, plus veterans' preference points, if eligible. The names of all competitors rated eligible for appointment will be placed on the proper register according to their final scores.Additional Information
