Description

This position is currently generally scheduled approximately 15/hrs per week: Mondays & Thursdays 5:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.; Sundays, 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. This is not a seasonal position.


This position is responsible for providing instruction in a variety of recreation classes, programs, and activities depending upon the position hired for.

Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties

General Duties:

Develops curriculum to accomplish class objectives.  Provides supply list of items students will need to purchase for each class; inventories supplies needed and purchases supplies prior to start of class.  Provides written course description outlining class objectives.  Prepares classroom environment prior to each class session (i.e. sets up equipment as needed.) Creates appropriate group/individual formats.  Fosters a creative learning environment.  Identifies individual student needs. Conducts all classes per requirements and guidelines.

Announces class registration deadlines and schedule changes as needed.  Adapts class pace/content to accommodate different student skill levels and needs.  Identifies class objectives to students and skills they will build as a result of participation in the class.  Evaluates students on knowledge and skills acquired in class and whether they meet the requirements to pass the course.  Evaluates program content and methods with staff supervisor, utilizing student feedback.

Provides a safe and non-intimidating learning environment.  Maintains control of class environment.  Provides feedback to class participants.  Maintains current and accurate attendance records, recording attendance on a daily basis.  Inspects equipment to insure safety and cleanliness.  

Performs all necessary customer service pertaining to class instruction including communication about course objectives, course content, feedback to parents or students about progress, fills out appropriate paperwork, answers questions effectively and appropriately; follows up with customers as necessary.

The incumbent will have working knowledge of course curriculum and be able to demonstrate skills to students.  Must be able to multitask as students will be working at different difficulty levels.  The incumbent will maintain gear; inspect ropes, gear, harnesses, and belay devices before use.  Provides organization of the class.

Administrative Duties:  

The incumbent is responsible for effectively managing his or her workload to achieve departmental goals.  Assures that responsibilities are performed in compliance with federal and state regulations, Broomfield policies and procedures and the Broomfield Municipal Code.  Maintains confidentiality of information consistent with applicable federal, state and county rules and regulations.  The incumbent may confer with employees, supervisory, and administrative personnel regarding departmental policies and procedures.  

Budget/Resource Management:  

Assures that responsibilities are performed within budget and performs cost control activities such as monitoring expenditures to assure sound fiscal control.  Works with the team to avoid duplication of service and to ensure that customer expectations are recognized and resolved thereby maximizing customer satisfaction.  

Public Relations/Communication:  

The incumbent meets and confers with customers to explain departmental plans, programs, functions, policies, and procedures.  Talks with customers.  

Miscellaneous Duties:  

The incumbent keeps operational records and makes required reports.  May operate a personal computer including associated software programs.  May operate a motor vehicle in traveling to and from work sites.  Assures that facilities and equipment are maintained properly and coordinate maintenance and repair functions.  Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.  Uses all required safety equipment.  Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Training – Indoor/outdoor climbing certification through AMGA or CWA is preferred.

Experience – Minimum of one year climbing experience.  Prefer experience working in the climbing industry.

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: – Must be at least 18 years of age.  Ability to obtain and maintain CWI certification from the Climbing Wall Association. Must possess and maintain current valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR certifications for continued employment.  Applicants must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer tests: oral interview, reference checks, background checks including local police check, sex-offender registry, CVSA/polygraph, and fingerprint processing through CBI/FBI.

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.  Work may require indoor and outdoor activities.  The noise level in the environment is moderate.  This position may require a variety of work hours including evenings and weekends. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop or kneel, and bend down to pick up objects.  Requires walking or standing to a significant degree.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, and peripheral vision.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Physical demands are described as heavy (exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects).  Duties may include but are not limited to lifting, moving and maintenance of equipment.  Climbing and Belaying required.
