Major Functions
**NOTE: This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice.**
Illustrative Duties
- (NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)
- Pilots the Volusia County Sheriff's Office helicopters in support of various law enforcement activities. Activities include but are not limited to: surveillance, searches, crime detection, prevention, photo missions and search and rescue missions;
- Provides transport of personnel in support of natural disasters or other events;
- Responds to motor vehicle accidents, transports critically ill patients to trauma centers and conducts inter-facility medical flights
- Provides surveillance and support for wildfires, including water bucket operations;
- Assists other municipalities, law enforcement and government agencies as needed;
- Conducts pre-flight and post-flight inspections;
- Performs inspections of aircraft and related instruments and equipment;
- Ensures aircraft meets the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulatory requirements for safety of flight;
- Maintains cleanliness of the department's aircraft and work spaces as assigned;
- Oversees aircraft servicing and handling operations;
- Communicates with department personnel and other agencies and departments within the scope and depth of their assignment
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Must be able to work during disasters with assigned duties and areas.

Minimum Requirements
- Graduation from high school or possession of GED.
Hold a valid FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate or Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with a Rotorcraft Category and Helicopter Class Rating at the Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot level. If a Commercial Pilot's Certificate is held, the applicant must also hold an Instrument-Helicopter rating. If an Airline Transport Pilot's Certificate is held, the Rotorcraft-Helicopter rating must not be limited to Visual Flight Rules (VFR); as well as a valid, FAA First or Second Class Medical Certificate, for exercising the privileges of a Commercial Pilot Certificate.
Must have 1,000 Hours of flight time as a pilot in Rotorcraft-Helicopters including:- 100 Hours of Cross-County flight time, at least 25 hours which were at night;
- 100 Hours of Turbine Helicopter time;
Must be able to pass the FAA – Part 135 Check Ride within ninety (90) days of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license within thirty (30) days of hire. Must reside/relocate in or within twenty (20) air miles of Volusia County within six (6) months of hire, unless waived by the Sheriff.
The preferred candidate, having met the minimum qualifications, will have at least 100 hours on the following:- Flying in a Bell 407 aircraft,
- Being a Pilot in Command in helicopters at night;
- Being a Pilot in Command in turbine helicopter.
- Flight time as a pilot in helicopters in the previous 12 calendar months
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of the operation of the aircraft to which assigned.
- Knowledge of FAA regulations and controls relating to the operation of helicopters.
- Knowledge of Volusia County geography, incorporated and non-incorporated areas.
- Skilled in the operation of assigned aircraft in accordance with department rules and procedures.
- Able to pass acceptance check flights.
- Able to pass airman competency and proficiency checks as required by the FAA and the department;
- Able to successfully complete initial and recurrent training as required by the FAA and the department;
- Able to react promptly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Able to make independent decisions with a minimum of supervision and under stress in non-routine situations.
- Able to effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
- Able to communicate effectively both in writing and orally.
- Skilled in piloting helicopters in varying weather conditions, both day and night.
- Skilled in completing flight operation logs and other aircraft flight documentation.
- Skilled in conducting pre- and post flight aircraft inspections.
- Able to work under stressful conditions.
- Able to interact effectively with others.
- Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands: Light to medium work. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, climb, see (including peripheral vision and color acuity), hear, stoop, crouch, feel, handle; manual dexterity. Visual acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception) necessary to operate motorized vehicles, aircraft, and other assigned equipment.
Environmental Demands: Outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including wind, rain, humidity, cold, heat. May be exposed to noise, dust, fumes, odors and chemicals, confined spaces.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and instructions; procedures, safety instructions, memos, reports. Ability to write at a level to relay data, details and information.
