The Pasadena City Attorney's Office is seeking an Assistant City Prosecutor to direct and manage the work of professionals in the prosecution of state and local misdemeanor offenses occurring in the City.

The ideal candidate will be  responsible for supervising the day-to-day activities of attorneys in the Prosecutor's Office. The incumbent ensures the timely processing of misdemeanor cases, using a computerized tracking system to monitor the case filing and disposition of criminal complaints, oversees the conduct of office hearings, pretrial hearings, court and jury trials, and represents the People of the State in motions, writs and appeals resulting from the filing of complaints.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, organizes and supervises the day-to-day operations of the attorneys in the Prosecution Department; prepares and recommends guidelines and procedures for case filings and dispositions; monitors and reviews the preparations and filing of criminal violations; presents the more difficult misdemeanor cases in court, arguing motions and conducting court and jury trials.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the operation of the department.
  • Confers, at the request of the City Prosecutor and/or Chief Prosecutor, with City department representatives to provide advice and counsel on prosecution under the laws and ordinances affecting their work.
  • Coordinates and directs special teams and programs for preventing violations, under the direction of the Chief Prosecutor.
  • Monitors and ensures the updates of the computerized tracking system and office procedures; revises procedures and methods to maintain efficiency.
  • Provides for staff training and professional development; develops law enforcement training in the areas of criminal law, procedure and trial tactics.
  • Reviews citizen complaints, reports from the Police Department, and other governmental departments and agencies; evaluates admissible evidence available; determines if a complaint would be filed.
  • Conducts office hearings; views physical evidence; hears testimony of witnesses; determines the propriety of filing criminal complaints when the evidence indicates a criminal violation and voluntary compliance is not achieved.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the public, the courts, other members of the criminal justice system and City staff; directs the preparation and maintenance of correspondence, records and reports.
  • Acts in the absence of the Chief Prosecutor.

Qualification Guidelines

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited law school and five years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of law including three years of experience as a prosecutor for a governmental agency, plus two years direct supervisory or technical lead experience in an administrative capacity.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
The examination process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience, with the most highly qualified candidates being invited to participate in an oral interview(s),/ performance and/ or written examination.

Special Requirements

Active membership in the California State Bar.

Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
