Description

The City of Olathe Public Works Department is actively seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer to supervise, plan, and prioritize including transportation planning, traffic engineering operations and asset maintenance in the areas of signal coordination, streetlights, traffic design, development review, pavement markings, signs and traffic studies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise the design and inspection of public improvement projects; provide guidance to assigned staff; ensure compliance with Federal, State and City codes and regulations.
  • Exercise professional engineering judgment in accordance with currently accepted practices of civil engineering and appropriate laws and codes.
  • Assist inspectors in the interpretation of plans and resolution of problems during construction; review plans to ensure compliance with original plans and specifications; approve changes to approve plans and specifications.
  • Assists with the update and creation of Capital Improvement Projects.
  • Reviews new development and public improvement construction plans.  Makes recommendations for system enhancement and compliance with the Access Management Plan to improve or sustain traffic flow and operating levels of service.
  • Participate and lead a variety of special engineering studies to determine impact of various projects; prepare technical reports.
  • Performs various traffic engineering field reviews.  Analyses data for use in evaluating and improving traffic flow performance.
  • Assist in the preparation and supervision of consultant and contractor services contracts.
  • Answers questions from citizens regarding various traffic related issues and responds to complaints or questions about specific locations.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Experience & Education

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION GUIDELINES Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: 5 – 7 years of experience in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis in traffic engineering or a related field. 1 -2 years administrative and/or supervisory experience.
 
Education: Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university with major course work in Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning or related field.
 
Knowledge of:
·         Transportation Planning Principles
·         Travel Demand Modeling Theory & Principles
·         Traffic Engineering and Transportation Planning Principles & Tools
·         MUTCD
·         Advanced Knowledge of TransCAD, Synchro, SimTraffic, and ArcMap

License/Certification:  Professional Engineer's License in Kansas or ability to obtain same within 1 year is required.  Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification preferred. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver's License.
