Duties Summary
Independently performs duties at a swimming pool to protect life, prevent accidents, and assist persons in distress; enforces pool safety regulations; conducts or participates in water safety instructions, swimming instructions, and other recreational aquatic programs; maintains pool and pool area; and performs other related duties as required.
Immediate vacancies are at Kawamoto Swim Stadium in S. Hilo and Kona Community Aquatic Center in Kailua-Kona.
As need arises, positions available may be:
Permanent Full-time/Part-time (Salary will be pro-rated for part-time)
Temporary Full-time/Part-time (Salary will be pro-rated for part-time) Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.
The Department of Parks and Recreation will administer a swim and agility test to all candidates who meet the minimum qualification requirements.
Candidates must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.Examples of Duties
- Watches over patrons at a public swimming pool to protect life and prevent accidents.
- Rescues swimmers and assists others in distress.
- Provides first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation as necessary.
- Enforces safety regulations and takes corrective action to ensure the safety of patrons.
- Warns parents or responsible adults not to leave young children unattended.
- Prepares daily log and reports describing accidents, first aid given, drowning or near drowning, and other unusual occurrences.
- Assists and participates in program planning and scheduling, and conducting and coordinating aquatic instructional and recreational activities.
- Maintains water quality standards and keeps a daily record of all information.
- Operates all machinery of the circulation/filtration system.
- Maintains proper chemical standards through the use of the automated chemical feed system; makes adjustments when needed.
- May be required to travel independently to attend swim meets or other events and regular meetings.
- Maintains pool, pool deck, buildings, locker rooms, spectator areas and walkways, and all surrounding areas to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
- Attends in-service training classes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:- graduation from high school, and
- possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate, or
- other current equivalent certification, and
- a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate as applicable to the position (current vacancies do not require the WSI), and
- ability to travel independently to various geographic locations. This requirement may be fulfilled by the possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3), a valid comparable driver's license, or use of other means of transportation that meets position needs.

Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points.
Knowledge of: Techniques and methods of lifesaving; techniques of emergency life support including mouth-to-mouth and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation; first aid principles and practices; artificial respiration; methods and practices of filtering and purifying swimming pool water; cleaning methods and materials and equipment used; and report writing.
Ability to: Rescue persons from the water; administer first aid and CPR; recognize when ill or injured persons require professional medical care; prepare clear and concise operational and incident reports; enforce regulations; conduct and instruct aquatic classes and activities; deal tactfully and effectively with the public; and read and follow written instructions.
